No. 30 Cast Iron pot

A while back I bought a No. 30 cast iron pot from 90 yr old lady in Lawrenceburg Tn. She told me that her daddy had the pot for as long as she could remember. He had bought two of them and mainly used only one. This one was the spare as you can tell by the legs not having been burned down. When I got it it had a light coat of rust in it. After some seasoning with lard I think it turned out pretty good. I paid $100 for it.

The lady I bought it from said when it wasn't being used it was stored in the barn sitting on bricks. She was 90 years old and said she had taken baths in it when she was little.

That is one of the best things you'll ever own.
Keep the stories close, and mKe sure to keep it in the family.
Always Always keep it clean and teach those near to you to keep it clean.
I have cast iron that came across the pond with my family and I hold it close to my heart.
You should consider that big arse pot a treasure!

Good looking wash pot. With a little care, it should last a hundred years.

Can you post a picture of the other side? How many gallons does it hold and what are the dimensions? Looks like a great heirloom to pass down through the generations.

It is 25" across and 17" deep. Not sure about the gallons. Somebody told me No.30 means 30 gal. I don't think it would hold 30 gallons though.

I used to think it was quarts. Then an old boy from Pennsylvania who used to make them told me that it was just a code for the diameter. #2 was 5" then they went up in 1/8" or 1/4" increments he could remember which.
Nice old pot though. Would love to find one like that.

With those measurements, I bet it is pretty close to 30 gallons.
Looking at the legs and the side hooks it looks very similar to that one I have that has been in my family for at least 80 years that we know of. But mines a 15 gallon.
If I get a chance I may check the measurements on it.

At 25" across, a 12" straight side depth would be 25 gal. A 17" straight side depth would be 35 gal. But since your side are curved, it could be very close to 30 gal.
