Microwave popcorn discovery

Did you know that you can just buy popcorn seeds, put them in a paper bag in the microwave and they will pop? Afterward, just add butter and salt as desired. I just discovered this. I love homemade popcorn and hate the typical microwave stuff that they sell. Mind: blown

Yep. It is nice b/c you can make just a handful at a time...nice for garnish or making trail mix, etc.
Also in the realm of "cool stuff in the microwave": slice a potato paper-thin, brush slices w/oil, and put on a bacon tray. Microwave 2-3 minutes at full power, and you will have damn tasty homemade chips. Sprinkle w/seasonings before cooking, if you like.
ETA the same technique will work with thinly sliced shallots to make a crispy fried shallot garnish (like on many viet dishes).

Might be the greatest thing I've learned on this board.

daaaaaang, I figured the fields of nebraska were filled with rows of orville red and bockers microwave popcorn ears and all they had to do was shuck, cut, bag it, and wrap some plastic around it.

or you could cook it in a pot with coconut butter and have the best popcorn ever

Buying popcorn makes sense because the corn is specially bred for popping. You get fewer old maids and the corn pops fluffier. I don't see enough of a problem not to buy it.

i gave up microwave popcorn a few years ago, when i rediscovered how great fresh stove-top popcorn can be.
this week, i tried, for the first time, making popcorn using coconut oil. wow. really good. there really is no going back to regular oil.

I learned this from one of Alton Brown's cookbooks a few years back. Easy and good.

So do you have to seal the paper bag?

No.
Sorry, I couldn't help it.

Learned this in Kirby Smith 1988 We were trying to replicate those newfangled popcorn bags!

On the stove is the only way I make it now. The wife was making a bunch of popcorn and then drizzling some candy coating on it for a kids birthday party, and we made a ton of popcorn that day. After that, I'll never go back to bagged microwave popcorn.
