Just Got a French Press - Coffee Suggestions

Just bought a french press and grinder and don't know much about quality coffee.
I know I am in a different area than most of you, but is there any whole bean coffee you can suggest that is available nationally at supermarkets or online?

the starbucks whole bean is good..albeit a bit 'greasy'
my favs are verona, italian and french roast.
i dont care for seattle's best.
the 5oclock whole bean is awful.
trader joes has decent whole bean coffee but still prefer starbucks.
and of course, peets
if it ever goes on sale.

Just drink some beer. It will start off your day a lot better than coffee.

The key to a french press is to grind your own beans. Grind them right before you pour the water on them. Fill the pot a little over half way and let the coffee "bloom" for 3-5 minutes. Then add the rest of the hot water, stir for about 15 seconds and then press.

Best thing is going to a local coffee place and asking them for something that goes best with a french press. In BR I've gotten good coffee from Magpie cafe which turned out good. Just expect to pay a decent price for the good coffee. Make sure you have a scale because your water to coffee ratio is very important and time too. 16g water to 1g of coffee is a good start and make sure to brew around 4 minutes. You can play with it from there. What kind of grinder did you get?

Find a local roaster and get some Sumatran Mandheling. At least, that's what I use in my press on the daily. It is pretty dark and rich.
If you like brighter flavors, try a Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or Kenyan AA.

I had really good results with grinding the whole bean creole roast from River Road coffee. It's readily available even at Walmart and you can hunt through to get the freshest roast based in the date sticker.
Now days I roast my own for espresso, but I'm a bit nerdy with it. I do save money that way and always have super fresh. Easy to do

I ordered from them for awhile, and then their roasts changed. The French Roast beans I was ordering were no longer dark roasts, as described on their website.
I called to ask about the difference in the beans, and was told "we don't like dark roasts here in our office, so we changed our roasting process to get a lighter roast."
