I never have used many of these ,but out of curiosty I picked up a few by Oakgrove Smokehouse on a recent visit. I had heard people here say their Jambalaya mix was actually pretty decent. I was thinking of giving it a shot mainly out of curiosity....Anyone use this or other products of this type with any success? I normally cook everything from scratch without a recipe, but i thought these might do for a quick supper...

I've read on here that this brand is good. The only packaged product I've used is the dirty rice from Zatarains and Tonys , and while both are good, I like Zat's best.

Oak Grove is the ONLY edible jambalaya mix out there. Don't waste your money on anything else.

add the trinity and season the chicken
otherwise it's a bit bland, imo

of course.... How is the salt content? I am always a little leary of using tonys and the like with anything that contains salt.....

Nothing beats the real thing, but I have used several of these products with success.

As far as the jambalaya mixes go, all they really are is package of rice and seasonings. I've used several of them when I've been too lazy to make jambalaya from scratch. None of them are very good if you just follow the instructions on the package. All of them are acceptable if you modify them by cooking some trinity in the pot before following the instructions. The sugar content of the vegetables makes all the difference in the world in the flavor, and they enhance the appearance as well.

+2 on the Oak Grove
Yea I agree as well. If you must use one its the one. They also make a real good spicy fried chicken flour mix too.

If you really wanna do it right, smoke a pork shoulder and use that in place of the chicken.

My buds, the Pizzalotta's that own Tony's Seafood along with Louisiana Fish Fry Products have an etouffee mix that if you add onions, a little more butter and a 1/4 cup more water than the recipe calls for, along with a few drops of crab boil, some sea salt & black pepper, add either crawfish tails or shrimp, and it's the best etouffee you'll ever eat.
Good Stuff

As others said, Oak Grove is the only one worth using. Zatarain's & Tony's taste too salty, IMO.
Tip: Oak Grove Jambalaya mix used to taste salty to me as well, so we would just add more rice & water to dilute the seasoning a bit. However, in recent years, I've found that they've toned down the salt in their mix some and it tastes fine now.

Jambalaya mix is all I use. I think its the best out there and it is easy to put together.

What up Mout? Good to hear from you and hope you make a tailgate appearance this season.
We use the Oak Grove Jambalaya mix a lot at home and like it better than the others. We do as others have mentioned tho by sauteing down some trinity. I usually add a can of beer in lieu of all water as well. I usually steal one of my wifes crappy beers for this tho.............

The premixed Jambalaya stuff already has plenty enough seasoning IMO.........
