While I think Timber Beast > Mechahopzilla, I find it hard to think of another regular release of Lazy Magnolia's that's better than NOLA. I do like the Southern Gentleman, but it's so rarely available that it's hard to group it in the discussion. I haven't tried Southern Belle or Backwoods Belgian yet, so no comment there. Jefferson Stout isn't a favorite of mine. I like Southern Pecan, but I put it on par with NOLA Brown.

I still think there is room for improvement at NOLA, but they are by default my selection for best brewery in the area right now.

I didn't say it was a bad beer; I just said it wasn't my favorite. I love some NOLA beer though... they need to start distributing to Texas dammit

Their Gulf Porter is actually pretty decent these days. Much better than Jeff Stout I'd say.

I agree.
I hope Parish can take that title one day.

Posted by kfizzle85 Have any of these announced new upcoming brews recently that I'm forgetting? It's been all about all the new breweries opening recently, wondering if I've forgotten about exciting things the old guard already has planned.

I tried a flanders red the other day that was a prototype i believe, b probably remembers better than i. I also believe they have a baltic porter in the pipeline, but that was a few month ago when they told me that.

Really the only beer worth anything at LM is Timber Beast, though I recently had their Deep South pale and thought it was decent.

NOLA blows them out of the water on everything else and Irish Channel Stout is hands down the best beer brewed in LA or MS.

I enjoyed the DS Pale Ale as well. I haven't had the Gulf Porter yet.

I was "forced" to get the 12 variety pack of LM this week cause I needed the Gulf Porters in it for a trade...so I didn't get a chance to taste it but the DS Pale was the best thing in the pack. Not a big Southern Pecan fan and didn't care for the Jefferson Stout.

Like Ru said earlier, its just too thin. I had some Indian Summer and Southern Pecan yesterday, one had some malt to it which I found enjoyable albeit nothing special (I honestly don't remember which one) but the other was more or less flavorless. I haven't had either of those much in the past 2 years since being in Houston.

I'd rank the MS/LA breweries as such... and I know there are more in MS now but I haven't tried them.

NOLA
Lazy Mag
Parish
Chafunkta
Tin Roof
Abita
Bayou Teche
Covington/Heiner Brau

That might be a little strong, but I agree that Timber Beast is the only thing they make worth buying.

I agree.

I tried Abita's Select Mayhawk yesterday and I was impressed. It was good, just like their Oyster Stout. Why can't they make beers this good in their regular lineup?

Oyster Stout + Double Dog are both really solid offering by them

Because then they wouldnt be the 15th largest brewery in the country. They would still be tiny. the only thing Abita needs to do in order to please all of the craft beer mavens here (why did we start using that word?) is to bottle their Selects. That's it.

Would be game changing IMO. I'll have to bring this up with the family members I know.

I might drink Bud Select over Jockamo. Or over LA 31 Pale Ale.
