well I also don't think the majority of people that say "hey I'm jacked, BMI doesn't work for me" greatly exaggerate their muscle mass
Of course. People exaggerate everything to their benefit. I almost look at this as a common sense approach though. If you closed your eyes and were given two measurments on a person, height and weight, you could have a wide array of figure in your mind. If you were then given waist size it would automatically give you the image of what that person looks like with almost no variance. 6' 221, 34" - lean, athletic, healthy. 6' 221 44" - fat, slob, unhealthy.

jesus dude
no one is saying that adding another variable wouldn't make it more accurate
but no one has figured out how to do it right just yet
its obviously not as simple as you want to make it

Just for the record, I didn't lose my shite, and I am not emotionally inept.
But at 215, I was definitely a fatass.

But I think someone has. Thre is just too much vested into not changing, much in the same way of the food pyramid.

Lol, but the mirror told you that. You didnt need a formula.

In the literature there are many other simple surrogate indices of body fat such as the waist-to-height ratio (e.g. weight-to-height ratio-WtHR), conicity index - CI, body adiposity index -BAI), however, their validity in respect to BMI is still under debate [19]-[22]. Recently Krakauer and Krakauer [23] proposed a new simply calculated index of body composition (a body shape index - ABSI) as more reliable than BMI in determination of association between all-cause mortality and body composition. However, data concerning relationship of ABSI with health risk are controversial. ABSI was found to predict resting blood pressure in adolescents more precisely than BMI [24]. On the contrary, ABSI predictive ability was not better than BMI with respect to type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease in Chinese and Iranian populations [25]-[27]. The reason for this discrepancy is unknown, however, it may be due to ethnic differences in body fat distribution [28]. In addition, it cannot be excluded that BMI reflecting mostly total body fat differs in its relationship to metabolic variables from ABSI, which encompasses waist circumference, thus at least partially depicts fat distribution [29].

I am not a body builder. I am also not obese in any way, except BMI. But hey, it's a great metric that works for the average person
Do you lift weights and have a lot of muscle mass? If not even though you are not obese you could probably stand to drop a few pounds.

I'm well aware I have some weigh to lose. That is not the point though.

How much does bmi say you should weigh compared to what you actually weigh?

If you are 6'0 221 chances are you are just fat and are greatly overestimating your "muscle mass"
Either that or you are just in denial.

BMI wants me at 174 to be borderline overweight, which means more like 155-160 to be in the middle of normal/healthy. My lower body carries a lot of muscle, both from genetics and years of soccer and bike riding, and I have broad shoulders. So BMI is of little use to me personally.
I'm not going to sit here and say I'm in great shape now, I'm not. But getting in the 165 range is too much for my build IMO, and most medical people I've discussed it with (mainly PTs and nurses, but my doc thinks 185 is fine as well). My goal is to get back down to 185 while mainlining an active lifestyle.

Im 6' and 221. This was not done over a few years. This was done over a 10 year period. I was always lean. Graduated high school at about 170 or so and was freakishly lean, especially during wrestling season.

What position would you play if you could in the NFL?
Throw out BMI and use this.
I'll pick 6 foot tall and the 195 to 205 range like a WR or short QB like Drew Brees

Looking in the mirror is an insufficient means of assessment for most who live in fatass LA. That reflection may seem thin to you because you're surrounded by morbidly obese ppl everywhere you go. If you tried to buy a pair of pants in Paris or Rome, many of you who snub your noses at the BMI would be SOL. Most of us drink/eat too damn much and don't move enough....whatever the height/weight charts say.
