Ideal weight

I'm 5'10" and I've lost 41 pounds down to 174.
According to every chart I've looked at my weight of 215 was considered obese. That's a tough revelation to take in.
At 174 I am at the very heaviest I can be and be in the proper weight range.
I know there are a lot of factors etc., but what are the board members thoughts on ideal weight?

It's bullshite.

At my "ideal weight" I'd look like a skeleton. Different bodies are meant to hold different amounts of weight. For someone to say every person that is 5'10" should be a specific weight is ridiculous.

can you function in life? can you do basic physical activities without taking a break every 5 minutes?
too many variables on body type to say "this height needs to be this weight"
but BMI is a decent starting point for the average person

My ideal weight is like 190#'s. If I weighed 190 I would look like Skeletor. I'm cool wit 240.

Your weight seems just fine imo.
I mean Paul Allen wears around 240lbs better than most, even with his large purse. I think you'll be alright at 174

Do you get the meat sweats ?

All you need is BF% and a mirror.
Then layer on what Salmon said.
Then layer on your desired level of fitness.
You can achieve "ideal weight" and be nothing more than a skinny-fat diabetic with no work capacity at all.

I think theyre bullshite and it's hard to fit everyone into a box. Im obese and have a BMI of 31, yet im right at 13-15% bodyfat right now. If you are muscular, you are automatically overweight. Im 6'0" and 221 lbs right now, with a 34" waist. A chart shouldnt tell you what is considered ideal weight. We are perfectly capable enough as human beings to decipher what is healthy/unhealthy. The way your clothes fit, how you look in the mirror and most importantly, how you feel should be how you determine how much you should or want to weigh. I have been this exact weight for over 5 years now, +/- 5 lbs and about this leanness. Im in the process of losing 10 lbs right now, but only because I want to be lighter for the mountains of Colorado in September.

Body composition, energy levels, and physical conditioning (aerobic capacity and strength) are all that matter.
At the end of the day, your weight is just a number.
How your body feels and, in turn, how you feel about your body should be all that matters.

Agree that BMI is an imperfect measure, and that muscle weighs more than fat. But people in the US have become so damn fat, we're almost immune to seeing size for what it is. We see a relentless parade of fat, all day every day. Plenty of people delude themselves into thinking they're okay, when they're merely the non-fattest person in their family, work group, etc.
Fitness is important, but so is not smothering your heart, lungs, etc in excess weight. In most adults, BP and other vitals will respond positively to weight loss (not just medication).

It's bullshite because it ignores muscle mass.
I need to lose fat. I'm 5'9 now 240. Was 195 a year ago

Muscle and fat weigh the same. Muscle is more dense however.

That's contradictory. If you were to measure exactly one cubic inch of human tissue, muscle and then fat, they would not weigh the same because...

Muscle is more dense

No it isn't lol. One ton of bricks and one ton of feathers have the same weight and mass, but different densities because they take up different amount of area

Is there only 1 official ideal weight chart? Who publishes it?
Posted on 5/26/15 at 10:28 am to Zach
You can probably find it on the world health org or acsm
