I do not know anyone who goes out and drinks double IPA's at tailgates, crawfish boils, or the beach, and that is what Abita is perfect for.

I'll take a NOLA Blonde, a Parish Canebrake, even an St. Arnold's Lawn Moyer/Weed Wacker instead, but that's just me.

Canebrake is solid in this regard as well.

I would have to say Restoration Ale.

I always thought that was a pretty decent beer.

Now you know 2.

Abita was the first craft beer I tried back in 1994, so they will always have a spot in my heart. I went through college drinking Turbodog, Purple Haze, and Amber, while so many other people I knew were drinking Bud Light, Natty Light and other such crappy beer.

Fast forward 16 years, and I've discovered a plethora of tasty craft beers from brewers all over the country. While other brewers have been innovative and pushed the envelope, Abita has changed very little. I think their biggest problem is that in their attempt to make more beer, the new brewing system uses a 30 minute boil rather than the standard 60 minute boil. To me, it's lead to a thinner beer with less mouthfeel. Couple that with their use of hop extract instead of real hop leaves or hop pellets, and the quality of their brews has not kept pace with their growth.

I will still drink Abita from time to time when there is no better option. But I don't seek it out, because frankly, there are so many better and more flavorful beers available. But I know they are capable of making better beers, because they've had some very good Selects. They choose not to bottle these for some reason, and my opinion of Abita would likely be different if they would bottle them on a limited basis.

More power to you if you like Abita. I would much rather see someone drinking an Abita over a Bud, Miller or Coors beer. It supports a local business instead of a big greedy corporation. And I will take an Abita anything 100 times out of 100 over anything produced by Bud, Miller or Coors.

I enjoy Abita Amber out of a keg but overall NOLA is better head to head with every style of beer.

Purple Haze, but I'd really like to try their Restoration Ale, Abbey Ale, and double Vanilla Dog

Other than staying sober

I'd have to say Amber, on tap.

Strawberry

Going back a few posts:

Dogfish Head is not good.
Sierra Nevada is good, but they are not any more creative than Abita.
Abita is not a "craft" beer. They are along the lines of Sam Adams. Started small, and now they are national.

On another note, I don't understand why people have their noses up the asses of Sam Adams. They are another mediocre national beer. I guess commercials with some hippy looking guy make the beer seem genuine.

Also, some of the ones many of you are comparing them to are much more expensive.

You aint kidding.

I drank the shite out of their black IPA a few years ago. They CAN make interesting beer but apparently choose not to distribute/bottle stuff to create a little demand and buzz about their product.

As others have said, Abita was my gateway to other craft beers. I'll always choose an Abita over the mega-breweries, but I don't ever really seek them out. If I'm at a bar that serves the select, I'll usually give it a shot. The selects can range from reeeeaaaaallllly bad (biere de garde), to really really good (ESB #2). As far as what they bottle, I think the SOS is pretty solid. Also, I'm in agreement with most others that NOLA is the best local brewery.

Dogfish head is good and SN is more creative than Abita without a doubt. I'm not an Abita hater for the record.

Seriously... I really question your opinion when you say DFH isn't good. It may not be your style or you might not like all of their products but they make damn good beer.

I know Abita is looked down upon on this board and honestly rightfully so. Nothing bad about them, just really mediocre.

I agree with this. Very mediocre, but not bad. There are a ton of breweries that are worse.

That being said, my favorite of theirs thats bottled is TurboDog, then probably the Doubledog.

Of the select on-tap beers, the Oyster is my favorite by far.

Interesting. This whole board is based on extreme statements.

Compared to others in the same market and price range, DFH is not good. It's fine, but it is not a "damn good beer." I question your opinion if you think otherwise.

See how it works?

While I am not an Abita fan by any stretch of the imagination, a 34oz. Purple Haze at Pluckers is pretty fricking awesome in my book.

Except for the fact that I'm not wrong.
