Emmett's Butcher Shop in Elmwood closing

I just got an email from Emmett's stating they are closing next Saturday.
Sad to hear it. I didn't go regularly, but I did pick up some sausage every few months. Always had good product.
FYI- 20% off frozen and dry goods this week until they run out. Wise- you better go make a run on some jerky before they're out.

Damn. I just started going there a couple months ago. Hit them up every few weeks for some custom cut steaks. And they definitely have some great jerky.
Anybody know of a comparable place in Metairie/Kenner/Elmwood?

i know a lot of people liked this place, but i only went by there in a pinch and was never impressed. I get better meat at WF for the same or better price. His cuts were off and on, sometimes Id get a really nice ribeye, and few other times they were sloppy.
guy was a dick too.
with a stone face...."whadda want".
gtfo with your $6 box of ritz crackers

You're right about that. Guy acted like he didn't want business.
It doesn't seem this town has much use for butcher shops. I don't think any of them are doing great business.

His ribeyes were always chewy. Cant have a "butcher shop" and sell select or choice meat imo. Give me a better product.
There is a new place in River Ridge call Tres Bons, they are doing cracklins, boudin, sausages, head cheese etc as well as offering lunch specials, crawfish etc.
Cracklins and sausages are great, head cheese needs work. But it's a place worth checking out for the cracklins alone imo.

Yeah I liked their sausage, but that was about all that did much for me.
There is Chris' Specialty Meat out in Lakeview that has a pretty large amount of offerings for a meat market.

Butcher shops arent going to work in New Orleans for the main reason that we already have about 4 or 5 grocery stores with really top notch butchers.
I love the idea of a butcher shop, but in reality based on the car culture of America, I am going to drive to one place to make groceries not multiple.
Of course this doesnt apply to wine, cheese, cured meats, and a whole host of other things.

Further down on Jefferson highway is Tres Bon.
They are doing sausage, boudin, stuffed chicken, duck, quail, and all sorts of other stuff. They also have daily lunch specials. Been a few times now and it's very solid. Haven't had any of the meats but the sausage and boudin are very good.

Thanks for the suggestion on Tres Bon. Sounds good.
I almost posted about Emmett's last night when I saw they had all their kitchen equipment for sale on Craigslist.

This is exactly the way I feel about the place.

And Marques Food Wholesale Market nearby on Jefferson is also gone now, replaced by a food salvage store. Just hope it's better than Suda Salvage which was in the same spot a few years ago.
ETA: The Harvey location is still open.

Emmett is a cool guy never struck me as a dick. Hate to see the place go. Had temple meat regularly. I don't think the location was top notch, but what ua gonna do ? Tres Bon or whatever it is in River Ridge is underwhelming at best. Everything is Tres bland.

Everything?
I literally bought every product that they offer in their cooler two weeks ago on my initial visit, only thing I found bland was the head cheese. It was "spicy" (they have a mild version too) but wasn't remotely spicy. Like, at all. I also like a finer ground pork product, theirs was almost shredded.

i mean when you're the only person in there every time you go, you'd think he'd acknowledge you and at least smile.
He has never been a dick per se, but you're the owner of the store that bears your name. You might want to smile a little bit. You can give the customer another reason to come back.

I guess I focused less on him and more on the fact that his food is legit. Meat is meat, but his sausages, dips, and sides are pretty damn good.
Posted on 3/21/16 at 9:29 pm to Lambdatiger1989
his food was meh too. His sides are no different from what you can buy at breaux mart or cansecos. they took little effort .

You can't get an artichoke stuffed chicken at Breaux Mart. The Better Cheddar at breaux mart tastes like mayonnaise and cheese. You can't get the variety of fresh made sausages at the grocery. The only thing remotely close is some of the Marciantes(sp) sausages.that the groceries carry. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. Doesn't matter much anymore now does it? It closes on Saturday..
