Yeah if you mention Coopers you have to go to the original in Llano
As far as lockharts in dallas, they serve a beef shoulder clod which I've never seen before. They smoke it and hot damn that thing is good. It's served med rare and tastes like a smoked prime rib. Like butter
If you guys are ever in dfw the guy who founded chilis opened a joint two months ago called 10 fifty bbq. It's in richardson off 75
He said they spent two years traveling central texas and training/observing with luling market, blacks, franklins and its central tx style wax paper bbq.
Haven't been yet but they are always are sold out by 2pm and line starts at 10:30am. Buddy went and said its legit
My only complaint with these type of places is the prices are out of hand when you do everything a la carte. The drought is killing meat prices so it ain't changing any time soon.
Guess it's the price to pay for legit bbq. When I go I always meet my co workers and we try a little of everything and let work pay. It's usually around $25/30 a person

I've eaten at Cooper's in Llano several times over the years. It's a neat place...I think the BBQ is only average, though.

The Pit in Raleigh, NC.
I'm a Carolina BBQ fan, so any place in Memphis or Texas would have a tough time measuring up for me.

The best restaurant bbq was from the BBQ Shack in Athens, GA - although its been a minute since I have been there.
The second place (and pretty damn close) goes to Jakes Smokehouse BBQ in Virginia Beach (Norfolk area). They have those sweet corn nuggets that could be a meal in themselves... Going back up that way later this month for a ceremony, guess I know where we will be stopping.

For the record I'm not saying coopers is the best or one of the best
It's a cool scene and good place but there are much better

Agreed. Anyone going through Llano should try. It. I'd eat there again.

Saw's in Homewood, AL. Spareribs are my favorite and theirs are the best I've had anywhere. Archibald's in Northport, AL is runner up.

This is near the top for me too...
Other favs were A&J Tasty Pig in Snellville, GA as I spent a considerable part of my childhood there. It burned down a decade or more ago.
There is a place called Hodges off Candler Rd in ATL that I used to hit all the time in the late 1990's. I was one of the rare white people that would go in that joint. I remember walking in the first time and getting "the look" from the patrons and the folks behind the counter. All eyes were on me so I ordered the oxtails and was welcome ever since...

Ding, ding, ding. I've never made the trip out to central Texas, though, and I'm positive that if I did, that nice old lady's barbecue would take a back seat.

Ribs: The original Dreamland in Tuscaloosa. I am not a man of faith, but that was almost a religious experience.
Brisket: Franklin Barbecue in Austin. Well worth the three hour wait.

Arthur Bryant's in KC cooked some excellent meat, but I wasn't a fan of the sauce.
Jack Stack in KC was awesome, but admittedly I was pretty drunk by the time we ate there.
McClard's in Hot Springs, AK was delicious for ribs, but I had been hiking and eating fruit and trail mix for three days, so any meat was going to be delicious.
The Shed in Ocean Springs is overrated big time.
Used to love Kountry Korner in Sargent, TX... but they aren't open anymore.

I came to post this. Best brisket. Saw's in Homewood, AL had the best ribs I've ever had.
Franklin is good and I'm glad I stood in line and did it once, but I'd rather drive to Taylor and get better BBQ.

Saw's. Either BBQ (Homewood) or Soul Kitchen (Avondale). I prefer the Soul Kitchen though.
