I have lived in BR since they opened and I have never once seen their brewery despite having probably driven past them hundreds of times. It's practically invisible, haha.

has anyone tried Southern Craft's offerings? Red Stick Rye and Pompous Pelican DIPA?
are they good? Their brewery and taproom are right around the corner from me.
It's on tap at my local watering hole. Gonna check it out

I thought the Red Stick Rye was fantastic and the Pompous Pelican was good, but I don't drink DIPA's so I can't compare it to much. I would gladly drink the Red Stick Rye regularly in both restaurants and bottle/can from stores. I live nearby as well and I'm looking forward to checking out the taproom. The owner said he'd like to get it open by the end of summer. He also said they are working on a summer seasonal which sounded pretty good.

I've had 'em both. They're pretty good. Better than anything Tin Roof has put out.
I'm really surprised there are just two craft breweries in Baton Rouge after all these years. I think Abita being such an established brand has scared people off. Maybe if Southern Craft does well, that will encourage other folks to enter the business.
My dream is for an upstart company to partner with a good local chef and open up a brewpub in the old Entergy site on Government Street. I think that would be a home run. Either that, or for a new brewery to have a booth in that White Star Market that's going up on Government.

It's something that has been discussed, but unfortunately, the Redevelopment Authority which owns the property is completely broke. They have all kinds of great ideas, but no money to fund them.

The RDA is going to lease or sell that land to a private developer. Eight companies, nearly all who have ties to Baton Rouge or New Orleans, have submitted requests to redevelop the property. On Friday, the RDA could select a developer or whittle it down to two or three finalists.

Damn, that's great news! I hadn't heard anything from that project in over a year and thought it had been essentially mothballed when the rail project never went through.

If it does get redeveloped as part of a BR-NOLA rail connection, I don't think your dream will be too far off. ETA: Just caught up... if that development is dead, then I really have no idea. I'm with you though, it would be a great idea.

Can someone start this same thread for New Orleans Proper?
I honestly think New Orleans could get close to Portland's level, with multiple successful breweries by neighborhood. You can only drink certain beers by actually going to those hoods. I think NOLA could handle at least 20 more breweries just in the city and become a wildly popular craft beer town in addition to everything else they offer.
In reference, Portland supports 58 right now and is about twice the size of NOLA.
I honestly think New Orleans could get close to Portland's level, with multiple successful breweries by neighborhood. You can only drink certain beers by actually going to those hoods. I think NOLA could handle at least 20 more breweries just in the city and become a wildly popular craft beer town in addition to everything else they offer.

One is coming soon in the Bywater, I know one of the guys who is starting it but don't remember their name off the top of my head.

40 Arpent is in Arabi. I haven't personally tried one of theirs yet though.

Last time I talked to my buddy he said 2016 but I won't be surprised if it takes a while longer. Did find their facebook page, not much there yet.

I went and tried the two Southern Craft offerings last night, and ill echo what has already been said.
the red stick rye was really good. the pompous pelican dipa was OK.

IMO, this would be my preferred route. I've done some research on starting up a brewery/brewpub. The problem with a brewpub is that not only are you responsible for a brewery, you are now responsible for a restaurant. Restaurants have the highest turnover margin of any industry. I would be a nervous wreck. The only way i'd consider it (assuming i'm fully funded) would be if someone would takeover the food part, and i have equal say on what is served. There's also the problem of you are now employing 2 types of staff. Brewery staff and dining staff. Frankly, i'd rather just do beer.
(hypothetically speaking) I'd really like to open something like a Franklin BBQ and Brewpub type thing. Think that could be the cheapest route for creating a brewpub. Majority covered outdoor seating in a nice stretch of nature surrounded by trees, streams, etc... with a few self fabricated smokers out back. Have an indoor section for serving beer and a few tables, and the brewery out back.

The 13th needs one bad, but I wouldn't be shocked if one of the new comers didn't make it.
