If you like very rich n buttery, use brioche.
For a fluffier texture, try challah.
Old school is a very stale lean bread (like baguette or a country French loaf). But this kind will absorb more costing and be egg ire/more dense/custardy.

I know it's not fancy. But, my kids love it, and when I'm half asleep it is easy to make.

We like using stale French bread cut diagonally for bigger slices.

I've used everything from croissants to banana nut bread to hot dog buns for French toast. I don't know which was the best but they all were good.

I remember a lady at my church claiming to use eggnog as her base. I've never tried it but it seems logical.

The answer is bunny bread. The answer for most anything is bunny bread. Especially since you said "simple".

My favorite is when you tear a hole in the middle and crack an egg into it.

Better yet, make a grilled cheese sandwich out of it.

I'm so trying that grilled cheese / eggs in a basket that looks awesome! As for French toast the honey wheat bread we eat for everything else does fine with eggs and vanilla extract, salt and a little cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar on top.
