you're not going to hallucinate, so you should probably spend your money on something that actually tastes good.

The traditional preparation with a sugar cube and water. It's a very acquired taste though.

That's a dramatic understatement.

Start with Pernod or Richard. If you like those, graduate to Absinthe. If not, no bother.

My favorite way to drink absinthe or pernod, is over lots of crushed ice with super cold water poured over.

Check out t.a. Breaux's absinthe, he's from new Orleans and replicated the original recipe for absinthe. Kinda pricey but good from the bottle I bought.

I've been drinking Absinthe Mata Hari Bohemian. It has a softer anise flavor and benefits from a little sugar and cold water.

I would recommend Strega as an alternative to absinthe. It's sweeter and more approachable flavor profile. It too benefits from a slight chill and a little dilution.

Absinthe Frappe:

1 1/2 oz. absinthe
1/2 oz. simple syrup
1 egg white
1 1/2 oz. club soda

Instructions
Muddle mint in a cocktail shaker. Add absinthe, simple syrup, egg white, and ice; shake vigorously and strain into a collins glass filled with crushed ice. Top with club soda and garnish with a mint leaf.

I had a bottle of Nouvelle-Orleans Absinthe a few years ago. Was a bit pricey but not too bad; probably not for everyone though.

I have a bottle of Vieux Carre. Its very anise heavy. I'll bust it out with the fountain a couple times a year.

I wasn't so sophisticated, I would throw some water and ice in a mixer. Then slowly add cold water until I got the color change I was looking for.

Ted's from Lafayette and lives in Birmingham. He actually went to the Pernod factory in France and bought the brass kettles that Pernod used to make the original absinthe. He makes the real deal. His brand is Jade Liquers.

Sazerac has a swirl of absinthe in it.
