NC used to be like SC. New Yorkers escaped the taxes to the coastal NC towns and Charlotte/Raleigh; and brought their politics with them.
Shame too, I really liked Charlotte.

Californians moved to NC in droves as well.

The car and urban renewal ruined American cities. Nothing else comes close.
You sure do have your head in the sand for such an intelligent individual.

My perspective on this is formed by the works coming out analyzing the medical effects of mid-century infrastructure projects, which combined with the dismantling of the state psychiatric hospital system, all play a massive role in why American cities are the way they are currently. These same cities were far better planned in the early part of the century than they were in the post-war era. Urban renewal itself had generational effects which are still present today, and also contributed to displacement of whole neighborhoods, which in no small part drove formative interactions of the civil rights movement. Add to that the drug war, which furthered the deterioration of cities until arguably the mid-noughties, and you have the same relative set of problems in each American city. It is alarming to me that humans became rather good at designing cities before the car, and all that accumulated knowledge was disregarded due to the advent of the car.

All run by the same political philosophy. What could go wrong?

Add Milwaukee and Madison to the list. Madison has become a sewer under Mayor Sunbeam. Milwaukee is a little better, just stay away from the north side.

Cities are places you should visit, not places you should live.
Different strokes, different folks. I understand why some people enjoy the country but I’d get bored and feel isolated very quick if I lived on 10 acres 30 miles outside of town.
Sure, it would be beneficial in the apocalypse but I’m trying to stay of the mindset that the apocalypse isn’t here yet.
Yet.

There’s a lot more.
Columbus
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Cleveland
Cincinnati
Etc.
Basically every major city in every state.
It’s a shitshow.

The human condition requires a healthy dose of pastoralism and immersion in nature. Cities rob you of that.
You can find plenty of nature inside the loop in Houston. I think your statement while well intended is misinformed.

And what do all of them have in common?

There is a definite, calming satisfaction with being able to pee off your porch, day or night. Give me the country. "Big city, turn me loose and set me free."

Thomas Jefferson once stated that if the majority of Americans were ever crowded into large cities like they were in Europe, liberty would likely be lost.
I'm afraid we've lived long enough to see this prediction mostly come to fruition.

i'm not sure why everyone is cheering the downfall of these cities.
what do you think happens to america when new york, los angeles, san francisco and chicago go the way of detroit?
sure, you may be living on a nice plot of land somewhere in the middle of nowhere, but you'll be growing rice for the chinese government that recently completed a successful invasion of the US.
this is how empires fall. what's happening in America is shameful.

Understatement. How anyone would prefer car sewers boggles the mind.

Some of those listed....Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, haven't been "great" in 50-60 years.
Posted on 4/19/21 at 8:20 am to L.A.
Isn't Chicago basically segregated and most of the crime occurs in one area?
Posted on 4/19/21 at 8:40 am to Jake88
Nashville has to be on the list.

Even smaller cities are in trouble. Portland Maine has a large homeless population and what appears to be an open air drug market, in a city park, right across from the post office. The grafiti and trash surprised me too. It’s a dirty city.
I worry what these people will do to Bozeman.
