I've been thinking lately about some of the great American cities that've become shitholes

Seattle
Portland
Chicago
Baltimore
St Louis
Detroit

Atlanta is the only liveable one but even then the burns kill it

No desire to live in any large city.

I think I’m seeing a common theme there, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Add NYC to that list

Why anyone would willingly choose to live in a city center as opposed to a suburb or exurb is beyond me.
Cities are places you should visit, not places you should live.
The human condition requires a healthy dose of pastoralism and immersion in nature. Cities rob you of that.

Atlanta proper had actually improved over the past few decades, although crime is increasing now due to greatly reduced police presence and the city allowing criminals to loot , burn and pillage last summer. It will be one of the first to burn in the coming years if things don't change.
Memphis has deteriorated considerably. People don't realize how far this city has declined in the past 30 years. It's really sad and I don't foresee any improvement likely in the coming years.

Damn was hopeful San Diego was the last city out there holding strong, taking a trip back soon. Probably my favorite city outside of Texas.

The reason, I guess, is convenience to work, and if one is quite rich, living in the city is doable. If middle class, yeah, I’d stay in the burbs.

Would never have considered Baltimore nor Portland as ever a "great city" at any point in history.

Dtown is like a zombie apocalypse especially at night
Even more so now that they moved them out of the convention center for the kids
Balboa Park is ruined. Hillcrest is a nightmare as well

shite, we have a hotel in Gaslamp booked I’ll look at some other options then. We’re finishing the trip up in Dana Point outside of OC, only conservative county out there anymore.

I don't think any large city is safe and offers the quality of life that a rural area does.

Here's a csb about San Diego. The father of a buddy of mine was stationed there back in the 60's. I think he was a Marine. Anyway, he fell in love with San Diego, so when he got a job in Fresno he and his wife pledged that they would return to San Diego to live when he retired. He spent his career in Fresno and eventually retired about 10 years ago. They bought a house in San Diego and moved back there. They sold the house and moved back to Fresno in less than two years. He told his son, "It's not the same place it used to be." His son told me that story, and all I could think of was, "How freaking bad does San Diego have to be right now if this guy and his wife voluntarily moved back to Fresno?!?"
