re: Slavery was not the only issue the South was fighting for - Lima Whiskey
Slavery was the trigger, and it has been a point of contention for decades, but that's not why soldiers on either side fought. US Army soldiers talk about the concept of union, while southerners complain about the prospect of political slavery, domination at the hands of northerners....

re: Slavery was not the only issue the South was fighting for - Lima Whiskey
If you read period letters, which it appears you have not, you'll find that southerners complained about political subjugation by northerners. In the surveys we've made of period documents, it's the most common complaint, and the issue that Confederate soldiers point to. It's how they understood the...
It's always been wrong to own other people.
While we consider slavery immoral now, it was normal throughout antiquity and well into modern period. Our attitudes, are somewhat unique, historically. ...

re: Why the Trump Hate? - Lima Whiskey
They wouldn't mind Trump if this was about school vouchers, or tax cuts. Trump is a counter revolutionary though. He doesn't buy into their vision of green energy, world peace, and gender fluidity. That's frightening for them. It's an attack on the very basis of their world view. ...

re: Slavery was not the only issue the South was fighting for - Lima Whiskey
Slavery may have been the trigger, but the war was ultimately about southern nationalism. Southerners understood that they were being eclipsed, politically, and economically. But the south was also so different, culturally, that separation made sense. ...

re: Is It OK To Not Care For A Culture And Not Be Racist?? - Lima Whiskey
I don't like the modern American culture that elevates weak men, and denigrates ideas like honor and service. It's pathetic. To think that all cultures are equally 'good' is absurd. Some will, by nature, be more successful than others. Some will have more value than others. Compare the Ancient Gr...

re: Not all Confederate monuments are "bad" - Lima Whiskey
But 1500 commemorative sites & 700 Confederate monuments to these traitors is absurd.
How many is acceptable, 972? Two? Is it possible that the devastation was so immense, that the cost was so high, and shared so broadly across the south, that a generation felt compelled to hon...

re: Not all Confederate monuments are "bad" - Lima Whiskey
You use the expression "so called" to diminish it? I'm sorry, but it happened. You may not like that. But it happened. Our forefathers seceded from the United States, and for a few short years, the south was a fully functioning nation state. And it was popular. More than 90% of eligible mal...

re: Virginia receives request for a September rally at the Robert E. Lee monument in Richmond - Lima Whiskey
The people in Richmond and Cville are increasingly from out of state, whereas the rural population still has deep ties to the commonwealth. You get into situations where the city might want to do something, but the state at large might not. That's true in Alexandria for example. Richmond is o...

re: AP: Robert E. Lee a racist icon - Lima Whiskey
No, that wouldn't be true. Grant made his name with maneuver warfare. Look at his campaigns in the west. When he faced Lee however, he found himself unable to operate the same way. Lee always managed to get here before he could. Lee was able to both predict his moves, and get his army there ...
