According to espn he would be guaranteed a ton if he gets hurt. So I dont think coming back is insane like some people think
"According to industry professionals, the general rule is that a top-10 pick will qualify for $10 million of permanent total disability with a $5 million loss-of-value rider. The 10 to 20 picks would be looking at $5 to $7.5 million of PTD and $2 to $3 million in loss of value. Picks in the 20 to 30 pick range would be around $5 million total disability."
I think if he had a career ending injury, he would be ok with 10 million the rest of his life

It’s not easy to get a loss of value claim paid out in full. A lot of guys had trouble getting full payouts.

Try collecting that. Not as easy as it sounds. Matter of fact, pretty impossible to collect that in full.

Out of curiosity, what type of premium is it for a policy like that?

He would make more in his signing bonus in the NFL.
If he stays there is no really way to mitigate he risk financially. It will be about what he wants in life.

Your probably right, but even if he only gets 3 million, hes not exactly screwed. Nothing is as good as going get the money, but if he stays it ain't like he risking a life of poverty.

"There are NCAA rules that allow athletics department officials to help secure policies and there are also funds available at each university that can be used to pay for the insurance policies if the programs want to allocate money for that purpose."

Whatever he decides will be the right decision.

Then you don’t understand opportunity cost.

Devin can also rest easy knowing that he won't ever struggle to find a job in Louisiana if football doesn't pan out for him.

Jaylon Smith only collected 700K after dropping to the 2nd rd. He was a top 10 pick more than likely. It’s hard to prove more than likely to an insurance company writing fatass checks.

I have never gofunded, but I would gofund the frick out of that cause.

I want him to stay but if he is a top 10 pick, he should go and set himself up for life.

First off, the policies are extremely expensive and really only get close to paying the full value for catastrophic, never play again, limp for life type injuries. You can get a second, loss of value policy, for like if you drop from 1st round to 3rd, but those don't come anywhere near paying the actual difference AND usually any money the insurance pays you can be recouped if you get a second contact.
Hopefully he makes the best decision for him, but coming back and getting injured could easily cost him $15 million dollars.

I feel like several guys from this team will go on to do great things not football related, specifically Devin White, Foster Moreau, and Garrett Brumfield.

If he stays and got injured, at least he doesn't have to share a bunch of that with an agent. Players never get nearly what they sign for after everyone else with their hand out gets their take. Most agents have separate attorneys that get paid for all of the deals put to paper and that's a separate take.
