Willis made 42 million over 8 years in the nfl. Sure 10 million is nice, but not as nice as 42 million.

The 10 million is way better in the long run.

So 10 is better than 40 now? This must some common core mental gymnastics.

After tax (yes, tax--insurance proceeds for lost earnings is taxable income) that's about $6 million. That buys a 10 year annuity of about $790,000 a year. Hardly a good trade for 10 years as a starting LB in the NFL.

NFL Agents. I have a problem with them getting a huge paycheck from a player who at any time can loose his career. Our world is so F’d. Up, people get rich off another mans talents and blood and sweat. Same on coaching agents.

"According to industry professionals, the general rule is that a top-10 pick will qualify for $10 million of permanent total disability with a $5 million loss-of-value rider. The 10 to 20 picks would be looking at $5 to $7.5 million of PTD and $2 to $3 million in loss of value. Picks in the 20 to 30 pick range would be around $5 million total disability."

Does anyone know what the cost is ?
For a year?
For one game?

Good post, good thread. Reasonable comments without a lot of attacks. Refreshing! I like someone's earlier take that it is the right decision either way. Devin White will be a legend in his home state for the rest of his life. I see multiple car dealerships in his future.

The goal is to PLAY in the NFL, and get paid.

I think that one thing that could we could use to sell him to stay is, he could get picked by the Bengals.

There is no doubt that going to the nfl and getting a big contract is a better deal. The point of the post was that if "HE" decides to stay, he will not have to work again, The rest of his life. He is not risking everything. At 10 million dollars, you can draw 60,000 a month for the rest of your life, AND NEVER TOUCH THE PRINCIPAL.

you do realiZe players aren't required to hire an agent. The player could do all that work themselves.

Try collecting that. Not as easy as it sounds. Matter of fact, pretty impossible to collect that in full.

Been saying so. People think the opposite.

Out of curiosity, what type of premium is it for a policy like that?

Not inexpensive. Roughly $10,000 for every million in coverage.

+1. This is the way we keep our best players to stay around for their senior year. Problem solved!

The problem is those policies are always aggressively contested and the loss of value rider has never paid out as the player expected from what I understand.

One thing people don't ever talk about is the simple possibility that a player comes back and doesn't play as well. I don't think that would happen with White, but it's happened in the past with enough players to consider it.

An insurance policy doesn't protect against that. So top ten money this year, or possibly outside of the top ten with one less year of earnings next year. I don't know that he can improve his draft stock all that much.

I'll be as happy as everyone here if he were to come back, but I'd be shocked if he did.
