I have a buddy who I've know since 1997 who is a UT grad. We met in Houston when we both worked at JSC. He's from Cleveland which is outside of Chattanooga. He just moved back there with his family (just before Harvey). He loves that area.
I live in N. Alabama and if I could live in TN, I would. Especially the no income tax portion. Loved that when I lived in TX.

My brother lives in Soddy Daisy and both he and his wife work in Chattanooga. They have been there nearly 20 years, and love it.
I couldn't speak to living in the city itself...but in the suburbs out side of Chattanooga, it is pretty awesome.

What's the downside of living in Chattanooga? All I hear is all the great stuff but it's still not that big of a city.
What am I missing?

I have two friends who were not from BR but worked here and now work in Chattanooga area. They love it.
Do it!

Most of the areas public schools are pretty bad.
Lots of fat rednecks.
Crime rate isn't great and trending upward.
In the Bible belt, southern Baptists suck.
Roads are pretty shitty, but new state gas tax will help that some (I hope)
It gets very rural very quickly once you leave the city.

Why are you still here?

It'd be cool to get a place on Lookout Mountain.

Displaced covered it.
If you have some more specific stuff that you want to consider that you don't want to share publicly, feel free to email me at damguideTD at gmail.
Chattanooga suffers similar problems to BR. Our crime rate is not the best and it's getting worse.
We have the best internet service provider in the country though.

Would you recommend Knoxville or Tri-Cities over Chattanooga?

I am not a fan of the Tri-Cities, my sister lives up there and likes it though. I lived in the Knoxville area longer than I have lived anywhere. I really like parts of the area around Knoxville for raising a family. Can send your kids to public schools and crime isn't bad at all.
I really like Chattanooga for friends and work opportunities though. Have access to a lot of similar outdoor activies in both. It's a toss up for me between Knoxville and Chattanooga, so work opportunity wins out.

It's a really cool city. People are friendly, you actually get weather seasons, far less crime, still in a southern state. What's not to like?

Baton Rouge or Chattanooga...........? Hmmmmm
Hell, I'd take a $22,000 pay cut

Yes. I love Chattanooga. The cost of living is inexpensive the internet is fast and the fishing is great. If you are looking for a good church we love Rockpoint.

Lookout Mountain schools are shite unfortunately. Both in Georgia and Tennessee they only go up to elementary, and those are really nice, but then there is a huge drop off. Apparently they might build a middle/high school for Lookout Mountain, Georgia, but who knows when that'll get done?
And then, you don't get all the perks of residence in Tennessee, like no state income tax.
Signal Mountain has good schools and cool houses but it's no Lookout Mountain.

I'd relocate there in a heartbeat.

Pros/Cons of moving there?
Pros:
-Very low cost of living
-Beautiful city with a plethora of outdoor activities
-No state income tax
-Close to Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Asheville, Smoky Mountains.
-Publically owned fiber internet network
-Revitalized downtown
-Really good private schools: McCallie, Baylor, Notre Dame
-Chattanooga Mocs, Chattanooga Lookouts for sports
Cons:
-Chattanooga has always been known for crime. Although, I've never personally felt unsafe (Northshore, Downtown, Bluff View Art District, Moccasin Bend, Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain)
-Public schools are inadequate.
-Not a great airport - however, you are only 2 hours away from Atlanta.
-I've heard that Chattanooga is a very insular town and can be very difficult to break into. Take that fwiw.

If you are living on the good parts of Lookout, you can probably afford to send your kids to GPS, Baylor, or McCallie. So schools probably aren't a big concern for you.

Chattanooga FC for soccer, they are decent for the NPSL. MLS Atlanta team came up for a friendly awhile back.
