Why do you put the airport as a con. I love the convenience of the tiny CHA. Sure every flight goes goes through ATL, but I'd much rather Pat the extra $100-150 than drive down to ATL.

My brother works for Volkswagen in Chattanooga and lives in Ringgold, GA, about 20 minutes away. He's originally from BR and has lived in the Chattanooga area for nearly 15 years. Him and his family love the area. My family visits him every year or so and, from a visitor's perspective, I think it's a beautiful city with a family oriented downtown area. They also have a great aquarium FWIW.

However, they've told me the public schools there aren't great, so they've sent their kids to private.

I have several business trips to Chatt. every year. I really enjoy the downtown area when in town. There are plenty of options for food and entertainment. IMO I would look to settle north of town in the Soddy-Daisy area or other rural setting. I think it is much easier to get into the city coming from the north side of town. Is this a TVA job?

Received a job offer there that pays $22,000 more than what I’m making now. It’s not about the money to be honest, but the quality of living. I’ve always loved the city and have visited quite a few times. I have until the end of the year to make a decision and I believe my course in Baton Rouge is about done. I love this city but it’s turned into a shithole that is no longer safe to raise a family.

If you don't have strong roots in BR, Chattanooga is a really groovy, beautiful place to live. It's close to Atlanta, Knoxville, Birmingham and not too far from the Carolina coast. If you like mountains, there are a lot worse places to end up.

If I just have to take the money I save with the no state income tax and put it into private school tuition because the public schools suck...well, that is a big con.

I live in Nashville, wife is from Knoxville. I have done a lot of business in Chattanooga, and travel there frequently. It's one of the only places in TN I'd move to if I left Nashville. Sounds like a great opportunity, and don't listen to the folks who have bad things to say about Chatt public school. I know a number of successful adults who attended public school in and around Chattanooga.

There are good public schools here, but some of them are almost impossible to get your kids in them.

You can either move in to the area like Signal Mountain which has pretty good schools. Ooltewah has meh schools, not great and not bad either. Downside with Ooltewah is the drive into downtown, it blows. I do it every day right now, but looking to move myself. Hixson has good elementary schools, but meh middle/high school. Cleveland city schools are ok, but a long drive from downtown Chatt. Normal Park are really good, but you got to live in that area or get super lucky with the lottery.

CSLA and CSAS are both very good lottery schools, but you got to win the lottery. It's unlikely to get that.

That doesn't mean the schools don't suck.

Maybe so, but not everybody is done having kids once they hit two or three. I can't imagine how much it would cost to put 5 or 6 kids through private school. Like 140 grand for each kid, assuming they go to public elementary.

I've always liked the idea of Chattanooga for some reason. Maybe because I drove through so many times on the way to college.

To me it would seem like a better spot than Nashville which is getting crazy dense and expensive.

It seems to be very much like NOLA, if you can afford it, you send your kids to private school.

There are other options for good public school though. Just either have to spend the money and move to a good school area or pray you win the public school lottery.

Do you think Lookout Mountain will ever have a good public high school?

no doubt. I still think there are a few public schools in the area that aren't nearly as bad as folks make them out to be, and they are unfortunately lumped in the discussion.

pretty good write up

What's the downside of living in Chattanooga? All I hear is all the great stuff but it's still not that big of a city.

What am I missing?

The city has grown...but the infrastructure is trying to catch up. Once the huge construction project on Highway 27 is done...it will make it even easier to get in and out of town from the 'burbs.

Really...downtown isn't bad at all...but the suburbs are awesome. My brother's place is on Lake Chickamagua. Deep water year round, incredible views with virtually zero traffic. Then he has a 20 minute drive to work...he has the best of both worlds.

He’s relocating from BR. Schools are a wash, if anything, an upgrade compared to public BR schools.

Yeah, I didn't mean to paint with a broad brush. We are zoned for hixson schools where as DamGuide said the middle and high schools are pretty shitty.

The elementary school however, is excellent and was a blue ribbon school not too long ago. We will stay at out current house till our kid(s) is done with Big Ridge and then probably move into a Soddy zoned area.

The most important thing is there is no way in hell I would ever move from Chattanooga back to Louisiana. I love my family and friends in Louisiana. I miss the food a lot, but it's just not worth it.
