Swap if you want. Thats a nice looking S/W though.

New, I'd agree.
6mths down the road? Not anywhere close.

Is that the actual revolver? I would say if your Smith has the Hilary hole, trade it. If not, keep it.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Hillary hole but here's an actual photo of mine...

It's the built-in trigger lock S&W started putting in the revolvers in 1994 or 1995 in capitulation to the Clinton administration. The hole for the key is above the cylinder release. It's about aesthetics and the principle of the matter, if yours doesn't have the lock then you do not want to trade it in this deal.

Such a travesty that s&w seems to have zero plans of doing away with

I think the make some current models without them but they really need to make them CA-only and produce non-lock models for the free-er states.

Being a 686-4 makes it more sought after than later ones like the 686-5 and 686-6 which is the current model. 686-4 was the last model before they switched to MIM parts and the awful internal lock that is on all new 686-6 revolvers.

I own a 686 Smith with a six inch barrel and there is no way in hell I'd trade it for a Remington 1911.

I have a 686-1 with 6". I would never trade it or sell it. Best shooting gun I own. Bought it at a local range. They also had a -6 with 2.5" barrel. I couldn't decide so I got them both. The -6 is my second best shooter.
Don't do it.

No way in hell I'd make that trade. There's a reason why your friend wants your 686 so bad. The Smith is built 10x's better than the Remington. Would not be surprised if Big Green discontinued the R1 pistol in next 5 yrs.
If you are serious about the Python, you better budget $3000 plus.

1911's are everywhere made by everyone. That does not mean they are all good. Friend just got a full size kimber and it won't shoot accurately for anything.
That pre-lock smith is a damn fine gun. Do not let it go
Just because the prices for each are similar does not mean the value and quality are also.
Save up and buy a Sig 1911 if you have to have one.

I have the same gun.....SW 686 w 4" barrel. Best shooting gun I own. The only thing I would trade it for would be your 6" model. I'd like to have a 1911 but there is no way in hell I sell my 686.

A buddy of mine just sold his python for 4K. It's obnoxious.

but the reviews I've seen on this one are very positive.
Not saying that gun rags are the source of your reviews -- just stating. The gun rags get too much advertising revenue from gun makers, holster makers, ammo makers, et al to say anything negative about these products. One will commonly see a pistol test report saying the gun had "virtually" no malfunctions or some such BS.
As far as internet reviews -- yet to see one that impressed me. Most are just the typical recitation of features.
As far as issues with the R1911, just Google "Remington 1911 problems" -- there are plenty. This is just one example: LINK
Again, I (just me) won't be buying anything made by Remington.

gun magazines.
In any event, none of that would make me want that revolver more than the 1911.
