Kid at the grocery still mixes in a cold product here and there with non perishables.
That's stress.

A friend of mine went to Nicholls and it was pledge week or some bullshite and he told me there was this guy who was rushing, that had down syndrome. He said at first, everything was going good. The guy was dancing with everyone, even had some of the girls dancing with him, but evidently he was drinking.
He said all of a sudden the dude just started doing stupid shite and was laughing really loud at himself and was going up to girls saying "dance with me now". It got to the point where it went from "hey this guy is cool. good for him" to "what the frick is going on? What do we do?".
My friend (I know, people are going to say you don't have friends, blah blah blah.. His name is Donovan, he went to Nicholls and now lives in Houston) is a drinker and he said that night he said he was taking shots and just drinking more at a faster pace so he wasn't all in his right mind. He got tired of the dude. He said he was all of a sudden like a really hyper 4 year old in the body of a college student.
So Donovan, having been friends with me, tells me, some dude told him that he told him "here, hold my beer. I have a friend in a wheelchair and I treat him normal so I am going to take care of this". Donovan ends up getting in a fight with this dude and was holding him down telling him to calm the frick down.. Then all of a sudden everyone there got really pissed at Donovan before he tried to fight the kid with down syndrome. So everyone went from thinking he was cool, to not knowing what to do when he got out of control to feeling sorry for him when Donovan decided he was going to "treat him normal".
This story was probably a lot more funny when I first heard it and you would have to know the guy as well for it to be even more funny, but yeah.

It breaks my heart when I see one having a meltdown because I know all he wants to do is his routine and the situation just won't allow it
so much smh in this thread. People with Down syndrome are not perpetually happy and they can comprehend advanced ideas and they are not the type that cannot handle nothing outside of their routine (that's more autism spectrum which does occur in Down syndrome (some)). Yes, they are mentally retarded...slow, most are teenage mentality. Yes, they are mostly happy when in public because they are beholden to people (parents) bringing them somewhere that's usually fun for them as they cannot just go when and where they please. They are not perpetually cranky and prone to meltdowns in public. I have been around people with Down syndrome a lot and maybe have only seen 1 tantrum and I cannot recall that it wasn't an actual toddler.
I could say a lot more to dispel the stereotypes (they are so happy, they are cranky and have meltdowns, they are so promiscuous). They are people that have cognitive deficiencies, but they are exposed to the same culture and social media as all of us. I would say mostly they have greater dreams (get married, work, have children, own a home) than their loved ones realize that they can actually accomplish, and it's heartbreaking tempering their dreams with they can actually do. Most of the time they surprise everyone they know by their capabilities rather than their disabilities. However, you'd have to volunteer with them or love one or two to really know the uniqueness their personalities. Just try not to stereotype because you won't be completely right.
But yes, I think its unfortunate. Most of them would totally rock at life, but for having Down syndrome. I really wish this could happen for them.

Yeah but for every Hellen Keller like you're talking about, there's like a hundred regular down syndrome people.

Would a happy-go-lucky Downsie trade places with someone who has to work 9-5 and face day to day stressors? There's your answer from the other side. It lies in the eye of the beholder.
Depends. Can the Downsie get food for himself and heat his house?
