Do you think people with down syndrome are unfortunate?

It seems that the instinct of most people is to feel sorry for them. But every person I've ever encountered with downs has been incredibly joyful and seemingly care free. Really makes me wonder if they're the happiest people on earth

Spend more time with them. They get extremely irritable and hard to deal with. They're basically 30 year old toddlers.

I had a touch of downs in middle school. Your right, it wasn't entirely unpleasant.

Just because they are happy doesn't mean they are living a fulfilling life.

They are prone to some serious health problems as they get older. Heart disease and early onset dementia being two of them.

That's kind of a matter of perspective though isn't it? I'm sure a hyper intelligent AI would think you're not living a fulfilling life

Jesus there have been some outhere threads today.

Hell yes I think they are unfortunate. They are mentally retarded, cannot comprehend any advance ideas, and cannot handle anything notnin their routine.

It breaks my heart when I see one having a meltdown because I know all he wants to do is his routine and the situation just won't allow it

I knew a couple in HS and knew someone who had a younger brother down Downs. They were far from joyful. Aggressive a lot of the time and very emotional, to the point of no return, similar to an infant. I definitely feel sorry for them.

No. They are perpetually happy/content.

Whether they should be is irrelevant. They are.

There is your answer.

Would a happy-go-lucky Downsie trade places with someone who has to work 9-5 and face day to day stressors? There's your answer from the other side. It lies in the eye of the beholder.

This is their biggest disability. Most people with Downs are more capable than people give them credit. Instead they're treated like they're helpless and it holds them back from what they're capable of achieving. There are some exceptions as the severity can vary and there might be other medical issues.
