I'm not advocating for one or the other, I'm strictly just trying to throw out some bigger name bands formed post 1996 for comparison:
Fleet Foxes
Arcade Fire
Coldplay
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
The Shins
The White Stripes
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
Dawes
Foals
Band of Horses

Thanks for the links. I enjoyed the songs you provided, but they didn't knock my socks off.

Queens of the Stone Age is an easy one.

are people afraid to say Radiohead?

Looks like Spoon sneaks in, first album in 1996. I'd put them above MMJ.

MMJ is great, especially live. I like them a lot, but I feel like their studio albums trailed off a lot after Z. That's the only thing that, in my opinion, detracts from their overall greatness. Still a great band though.

What about The War on Drugs?

valid argument there

Never heard of them. So I'm going to say no.

Solid logic
Let's hear your favorite band who started releasing music within the last 20 years then

why bother posting on the music board if you have zero interest or knowledge of music?

Best live band of the last 20 years. Their last three albums were really just unremarkable however. Still really like them but they peaked around the time they made Okonokos in my opinion.

Still an overstatement.

They are undoubtedly a top ten band of this century.

The one time I saw MMJ live, I got kind of bored. They didn't do much for me live, though I really like Okonokos.

I'm a fan but I don't get my friends' almost religious zeal for them. I saw their show at red Rocks in May and have to say I got a little restless too. Much has been said about how 'ethereal' Jim James is vocally. That may be true but live, he has the tendency to bask in it too much when I would rather hear the band jam out.
