They are my favorite band of the last 20 yrs, but I hesitate to say they are the best. I hesitate to say that about any band really, because it's too subjective of a topic.

All better than MMJ. I've seen about 12 MMJ shows, they kill live. I love them. But they aren't in the very top tier with some of these other bands.

I mean I can list off a dozen concerts I've been to over the past 10-15 years that were better than the MMJ concert I went to.

I like MMJ. I would throw out the National and TV on the Radio. I think both bands always put out really good albums.

I loved their first two records... They've sorta fallen off my radar and haven't listened to the last few releases..
That said, I saw them live a couple of times (prob been at least ten years) and they were incredibly good!
edit: I wouldn't rank them as the best in the past 20 years... but that's personal opinion, and the question is pretty silly in general..

I've never seen Modest Mouse live sadly, but I've heard they can be awesome live or really bad, depending on how much of a shite Isaac gives. Or how sloshed he is.
