First album was released in 1999. This excludes bands who started releasing albums prior to '96 (Phish, WSMFP, Radiohead) for the sake of this discussion. I'm watching the Okonoko's performance right now and it gives me chills it is so fricking good

I don't know if I have ever heard of them.

If I were to listen to them, what are their top three songs? Please provide links.

I've really warmed up to MMJ the last 3 years or so. I like the fact that they don't corner themselves as a band and experiment with many different styles.

Jim James voice has an "ethereal" feel to it as well, if that makes sense. Another way of saying it, is when you have a really good feeling/head change going at a show, his voice will sort of carry a vibe up into the atmosphere hovering over the show and crowd. IMO it's an instrument in and of itself (a la Robert Plant).

I Think I'm Going to Hell is an example of a song off that Okonoko's show that represents the power of his vocals.

Mahgeetah

Slow slow tune

Off the Record

Touch Me I'm going to scream pt 2

This is real fricking rock music. Blows jam bands like Phish/WSMFP, or any other band really, totally out of the water. To the best band of the last 20 years

Might be a good time to pump the brakes.

Throw a band or somebody out there who started releasing music over the last 20 years you feel is better than MMJ

I don't really believe such a thing as an "objectively best band" exists, but if I was picking my favorites from 1996-2016 it would probably be Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The National, Animal Collective or Titus Andronicus.

MMJ is good, but they wouldn't be in my personal top 20 from that period, again not that someone who did would be wrong.

Modest Mouse and The Shins.

I like MMJ a lot, but James's voice can be grating at times, especially in a live setting.

And they miss the cut of your timeline by a year, but I'd put Wilco above them as well.

I really don't go down the "best band" rabbit hole. I really like MMJ. I guess the fact you excluded WSP and Phish from the discussion in your op, then brought them back into the argument to prop up MMJ in your later post was my "pump the brakes" comment.

MMJ is good enough of a band to stand alone on its merits without having to draw comparison's or put down other bands who were melting faces when MMJ members were poppin' zits on their funny faces. Just my two cents.

That said, I really like where they are headed and the fact that they look to be around for a long time.

Modest Mouse

Can see an argument for them but after seeing both at Red Rocks over the past month, it isn't close for me personally. The quality of the music, the stage presence, the energy from the crowd was just overwhelmingly better for My Morning Jacket. Not to mention Modest Mouse opened for fricking Brand New. Yes, you heard that correct. Jim James would never stand for that shite

Added bonus of one of the best guitar songs of all time, and something Modest Mouse can only dream of being capable of - Run Thru

Excellent call here.
I have also started to listen to Mercer's other collaborations, Broken Bells and Flake Music.

The WSMFP and Phish references come into play because I am constantly surrounded by hardcore jam band people. I like jam bands. I like them a lot actually. However, driving to the grocery store wondering where people are going and shite just isn't comparable to me. It's an insult to the greatness that is MMJ

An excerpt from their song Golden...

"Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode
Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before

Watchin' a crowd roll in, out go the lights it begins
A feelin' in my bones I never felt before"

totally different style of lyrics, am I right?

I love Panic, but ultimately it is very simple music for very simple southern folk. I also love JB, but they were never the same post-Houser

Anyway, this isn't about WSP. It is to appreciate the greatness that is MMJ
