But I thought this was an isolated incident of extreme national security importance.

Your government will take care of you.

Anyone who didn't expect an overreach here was kidding themselves. When has the US government not overreached recently when it comes to trying to spy on its own people?

I don't know where the line is between the rights of citizens to privacy and the responsibility of our government's (with the consent of the goverened) responsibility to investigate and thwart threats foreign and domestic but rational people will never all agree where the line is.
I personally don't have a problem with this entire Apple code issue.
Maybe I'm irrational, shallow and stupid.

WTH does the OKC bombing have to do with this? Are you implying that the government should be constantly monitoring all citizens without any level of prior suspicion a la the KGB? Because that's the only way they would have stopped McVeigh. He wasn't even on the radar.

Are you implying that they aren't already? Because that's laughable.

A. As is pointed out, the NSA is already applying algorithms to all communications.
B. Read the Preamble to the US Constitution: The goal of establishing our government Is to "insure domestic tranquility" "promote the general welfare" and "provide for the common defense". That means having the capacity to effect surveillance. And sometimes this means erring on the side of infringement on personal liberty or freedoms. We have enough lawyers in our society to eventually remediate any errors.
C. I'll take the present excesses of our government versus not having them watching over the situation. I get that we could become more like a police state. If forced to take an extreme from the two choices, I'd rather that than anarchy.

Who cares? Government wants to view the phones of criminals and terrorists. Phones they have possession of already. Go for it IMO.

I care. I would rather the government (and eventually hackers) not have the ability to break into my phone whenever they want.

I care. I would rather the government (and eventually hackers) not have the ability to break into my phone whenever they want.
Issue 1: Government Invasion-
I agree that the information contained on a smart phone is much more invasive than fifty years ago getting a wiretap. But from a legal standpoint, the public airwaves are being used, therefore the federal government has some oversight responsibility. Also there is a national security component to being able to review the information being exchanged. You can't have a 100% secure private communication system that uses federal airwaves.
Issue 2:
Private hacking. You think hackers aren't hard at work right now? Maybe the government having access might make their task easier but they (hackers) will hack ANY man-made system for the potential fiscal reward. Bringing this into the argument is a red herring.

Public Airwaves???
That's like saying Public Sunshine or Public Gravity. Pure poppycock that the "airwaves" are owned.
They have no right to my private business.

The Russians flat out WARNED us about the Boston bombers and they STILL couldn't stop it.
The information overload dilutes every solid thread of intelligence.

Gee. I didn't have you pegged as a fascist.
There is a famous quote about the man that trades Liberty for Security ending up with neither. You should check that out. BTW. I am pretty far right politically but having been on the inside of the GOV I can tell you that it's power needs to be monitored and controlled lest the "public servants" run amok.
