I can't tell if you're serious. If you are, that's a total kook move.

Just tell the guide you want to learn the area and you're not so concerned with catching fish, like the earlier poster said. Most guides I know actually prefer to focus on teaching people about an area, even though folks rarely ask, just because it's less pressure to fill limits.

Just be honest with guy. If he says no the next guide will probably say yes.

This way when you see him at the boat ramp and on the water it will be a pleasant experience and a hand shake rather than anger and awkwardness.

Plus crappie move with the water temperature if you build a relationship with the guide he may give you a tip when the water goes from 48 degrees to 58 degrees.

I emailed the guy last night and told him I was looking for a guide just to show me the lake, what to look for, and how to find White Perch. I made it clear that I would be bringing my boat to the lake after this guided trip to try to catch White Perch on my own.

He said that is fine and he does trips like these all the time. Said his rate is $230 for half a day. Said to wait until March-April before we can go b/c the bite is better.

$230 seems a little high to me. I have not decided if I am going to do this yet.

It does seem a little high, but if you get what you intend to out of the trip, it's worth it. If all you were gonna get out of the deal was an ice chest of sac au lait i'd have a different opinion.

How much do you make in half a day? It's work to this guy, not a hobby. He has boats and motors and fuel and insurance to pay for. No to mention the time spent on upkeep and time spent cleaning fish.

If you want to learn the area, I think $230 is more than fair.

Yeah, 15 years ago I would not have thought twice about doing that immature GPS idea. Not only would I have done it but I would have laughed my arse off with my friends while we were fishing in those spots drinking beer.

Growing older means doing the right thing.
