Oh I like em. Don't worry about it.
Darla, sushi rice has plenty of sugar. Might have something to do with it. Sushi doesn't have that effect on me, but it definitely gives me a very full feeling while eating and then I'm hungry not TOO long after.

Us too. Not an every day thing, but when we get the sushi feeling, nothing else will work.

Yep. The rice vinegar has sugar and rice will convert to sugar. Sashimi is where it's at, along with nigiri.

Spot on 100%
Rice vinegar = sugar

I like sushi but I also think it's overhyped and overpriced at some places. I'm not a huge fish eater either, so maybe that has a role to play, but it seems sushi is a much bigger deal to most women than most men.
I don't typically feel ripped off at sushi places, but I wen to Geisha House in NOLA with some friends a year or two ago and dropped almost $50 for 2 rolls and 2 Absolut cocktails. Food was good but I still felt ripped off there. Otherwise, I go into sushi places expecting to pay ~$50 for my gf and I to eat and be satisfied, and maybe have a drink or two.
Sushi's not a trend. It's been popular for far too long to be considered a trend. It's here to stay.

Sushi is 100% trendy. It is basically the Yeti tumbler of the food scene.
Seafood is gross in general. But leave it raw with bland rice and idiots will empty thier pockets for it.

1. Kinda good 2. Damned pricey
It's both. Sushi tastes really really good, and there's not really anything else like it. That's why it's so expensive. It's labor intensive and requires a ton of skill to do correctly. I remember 10 years ago a lot of people getting into it because it was trendy, but it is a fad that actually withstood the test of time because it's a great, unique product.
I would eat it more often if I could afford it, and my SO wasn't allergic to literally everything in it (peanuts, sesame seeds, fish, soy, ect)
My buddies and I often hit up the Kaminari near LSU for lunch since it's cheap, filling, and still pretty damn good.

Flavors are good, I just feel like a sucker dropping 50 bucks and leaving hungry.
I don't get how someone could do this at a sushi place
I assume you mean for 2?

Maybe both, but it is definitely delicious.

I went to Waka House one time by myself and dropped $72. That's why I now opt for Sushi Masa. When they see me coming they lock the door and turn on the CLOSED sign

It just has no flavor. i assume thats why everyone has to put sauce and wasabi on it.
I think this is true to an extent
But with the soy sauce and wasabi it's pretty good
Alone, I'd agree that it lacks any flavor

Nothing but trendy...

Only problem is, that'd cost me over $100 at Sushi Yama...

Dammit Wick. Stop posting that food porn.

Neither do I. Unless you refuse to order anything but the $17 super-specialty rolls.. and even then, that's like 3 of them. And still being hungry after three specialty rolls seems like a bit much.. I would wonder if any plate of food at any restaurant fills you up.
(I'm not directing this at the turd in this thread who orders two entrees and sides and appetizers at City Pork by himself )
I don't eat this type of sushi much, but still this looks like a lot of food and the bottom one isn't even a specialty roll, so you're looking at ~$30-$35 here.

We typically order a spicy tuna roll and a smoked salmon roll (what I normally judge a sushi restaurant by). We then order one specialty roll with the cream cheese, spicy mayo, eel sauce stuff ( ) and then one specialty with mixed raw fish. Also typical for us to go through small bottle of saki, 3-4 beers, a few glasses of wine and we are still able to get out of there for <100 including tip.

Trendy where? Monroe?
One of my favorite food experiences in life is going to a top notch Omakase restaurant in Japan with a highly skilled chef serving a restaurant of 6-10 guests. It is really incredible the difference when you have perfectly prepared rice, properly aged and handled fish, and precise ratios of fish/rice/wasabi. Just watching the chefs work is a great experience.
For those interested in doing so, now is the time. A high end Omakase in Japan could be up to $100 USD less than it was only 4 years ago due to the strong USD. Just remember to book early.
All that being said, I love me some of the "chick" rolls as they are commonly referred to on here, as well. Sriracha mayo, eel sauce, and some cruncy bits. Good stuff .
