Sushi -- really delicious or really trendy thing to do?

I always thought the latter.

I NEVER choose to do sushi on my personal time. I OFTEN get pulled into it for work -- with trendy worshippers. Dat 'plains why I thought what I thought.

That said, when I eat it, I always leave thinking 2 things:
1. Kinda good
2. Damned pricey

So, which one is it?

I used to think sushi wasn't really all of that until I went to Uchi in Austin.

Considering I have been eating sushi for 25 years I wouldn't consider sushi trendy

I've never heard sushi called trendy except on this board.

Uchi

Went to the one in Houston. Hands down one of the best dinner experiences I've had. Once they got to course 14, I was asked if I'm going to be okay because apparently I was pale and swaying slightly.

OP: I think sushi is definitely trendy, and I see where that can be annoying to some. That said, good sushi is good. I crave a slice of salmon and some sticky rice with extra wasabi.

Flavors are good, I just feel like a sucker dropping 50 bucks and leaving hungry. And I don't feel like I have one of those Man vs. Food appetites.

I don't think it is trendy. I think it is just more acceptance for the normal person to try it and realize it is good. Just like everything else, some of it is wonderful, some of it is meh, some of it sucks. I am partial to tuna sushi and sashimi. Salmon is very good too. Not crazy about sea urchin the couple of times I have tried it.

Even shitty sushi tends to be better than many foods.

I´m not a sushi apologist by any means. Simply, a spade is a spade.

I eat a set of salmon nigiri from Mathernes downtown almost weekly. $10-$12 for enough sushi to fill anyone up. If you aren't into those huge mayo rolls and your local grocery gets good fish, that's where to go if you feel like sushi si too expensive.

Depends on location honestly. I never found a spot I really enjoyed in Louisiana but I eat it for almost every other meal when I'm home in Hawai'i.

Delicious but only if you get the $18 rolls covered in mayonnaise and check in on Facebook so everyone knows you're eating sushi for dinner.

Been eating sushi/sashimi since 1984 , as I could eat it everyday. Make it at home on occasion yet it's never like the real thing served at restaurants

Sadly the price of sushi is higher than giraffe balls right now

15 yr old daughter and I did happy hour 2 weeks ago and it was still $106

That's just ordering with no regard for trying to have a cheap meal.

It can be very expensive but you can also get away cheap, especially at lunch.

Pretty much every place offers lunch plates for less than $15 that is more than enough food

When done correctly, top-tier sushi is tough to beat.

Maybe 10 years ago it was thought of as trendy. It's been around too long for that, so it appears to be here to stay! I love sushi, but I don't want it every day, or even weekly. But when I get the envie, I want some!

Trendy or not I'm amazed a town the size of Lafayette can support the 37 sushi restaurants we have here
