Chicks especially love sushi. I mean, I like it, but I could eat it 2-3 times per year and be just fine.

Maybe I'm desensitized by goodole coonass food, but...sushi (and obviously sashimi) is terribly bland to me.
Doesn't gross me out, and I eat it when I'm out with people who like it, but...it's just not really even food. Just a novelty. Shrug.
I don't get it, and I've been to some really good sushi places in Hawaii and Guam.

I eat 5 rolls like that typically.

You eat like a fat body. We get it

we always order the nigiri; usually salmon, tuna and i like the omelet (its also usually $3 for 2 pieces) along with some special roll.
if still hungry, you can always grab a phili or california roll for $4.
you shouldn't be spending $50 unless you add in alcohol.
eta i freaking love sushi but i'm the type who can put half the wad of wasabi on top of my nigiri and slap the table as i feel the burn.
i also love ginger and could eat my body weight in it and i know lots of people dont like ginger.

This. My wife could eat it once or twice a week. I'm just not that much of a fan. It's fine on occasion.
I'm also lol'ing about the OP referring to it as "trendy" as if it's the early 1980s or something.
Posted on 1/21/16 at 12:35 pm to BayouSizzle
Well it is trendy, but it's also delicious if done properly. There is a TON of bad sushi out there and you have to be experienced to know the difference when you start. I
see people in here say they have to spend a bunch of money, but here is what I do to save:
1 - tuna + avocado roll: ~$6.50
1 - yellowtail + avocado roll: ~$6.50
That usually fills me up.

Exactly. If you're eating 50 dollars of sushi in your average US sushi joint, you're eating a crap ton. And still hungry after that? Yikes.
True... but sushi, to me, is one of those foods I could easily overeat. I have no doubt it my mind that I could put down $50 worth of sushi. I might regret it, but I could do it.

Great sushi is fantastic, but is quite rare in middle America.
I often find myself looking at typical sushi joints with a bit of disdain. All that fish, potentially impacting ocean populations, just so a bunch of wannabe foodies can eat fish "as a condiment" to the massive amount of rice and soy sauce they have at lunch.

Depends on where you eat sushi. Better places charge between $5-15 per piece of nigiri (depending on selection). If you elect for some chutoro or otoro or some good uni, you can hit $50 in the blink of an eye.
If you are not eating crappy rolls and just going with quality sashimi and nigiri in a decent place you will easily spend $50.

I think this is true to an extent
But with the soy sauce and wasabi it's pretty good
Alone, I'd agree that it lacks any flavor
You are going to shitty places if that is the case. Good sushi rice is full of flavor and complements the subtlety of the fish very well. Soy is not suppsoed to touch the rice. You should very lightly paint the fish with soy. And the wasabi should be added by the chef when making. At nicer sushi bars the chef will also paint the soy on and there will be no soy on the bar for you to supplement.

I guess my definition of trendy is different.
Trendy to me is something that is on the cutting edge of something like lets say fashion. I assume when you hear trendy, fashion comes to mind first. Something trendy in this sense lasts a year or so. Sometimes more and sometimes less and then on to the next trend.
Ive been eating sushi since the 90s and they had plenty of places in nola to eat sushi. It has become more popular but I think it is safe to say it is here for good(barring some fish population laws/changes).

Yea that really does depend where you eat but otoro is a really rare and expensive item. There are probably only a handful of places in the states that get this.
We are mostly talking about your average sushi joint around here.

I might call it trendy if someone is telling you you aren't eating it right. (see the post above yours).
To answer, I don't think it is trendy as much as it is still growing in popularity, which might make it seem that way.
I like it a lot. Including, "oh the horror!" the lowly rolls.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the rolls, some people on here just like to think of their taste as more sophisticated than others.
If you like it, by all means eat as much as you want

There is a place in ATL that has their variation on the Volcano roll.
California roll with spicy mayo, then topped with warm fake crab and drizzled with warm teriyaki sauce.
Someday, I am going to go and tell them to keep bringing them to me until I say stop. So dang good.

Absolutely do it!
My favorite sushi ever was Ichiban's in Baton Rouge (I don't eat much anymore because my wife has a shellfish allergy).
I loved getting the He roll, Moscana roll, and Surf roll. All of them super delicious.
My plate usually ended up looking something like this
