food, sights, etc.

we practically just booked everything in the last week or so, and I feel like I'm not at all prepared. Usually, I'm in charge of looking up places to eat, things to do. So I turn to you guys.

Here's what I've been told so far from others...

Paris - stay away from the Michelin starred restaurants and look for the restaurants that are gunning for stars. less expensive, and probably the same quality

Barcelona - tapas and more tapas

Rome - i have no idea yet

i thank you in advance for the recs.

Man, talk about a loaded question. How long in each city? Any price restrictions? What do you like to eat? How big a group...

Paris - Couple of my favorite spots are Chez Michel, l'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, le Baron Rouge (bar), Regis Huiterie, and a plenty more.

Barcelona - Cinq Sentits, Mosquito, Comerc 24, Carme Ruscalleda's San Pau (about an hour away), the food stalls in the Boqueria...

I have dining maps for each city if you'd like them.

Of the three, Rome probably requires the most careful attention in order to eat well. The historic center is so hugely overrun by tourists all year round that restaurant/cafe/bakery quality can be incredibly bad unless you know where to go. Fortunately, Katie Parla's Rome recs are always spot on; she actually lives in Rome, so her info isn't out of date. Here's a link to her Rome guide: LINK

only the wife and I.

I know it's a loaded question, but I didn't want to start a thread for each city.

I would like your Paris dining map too. I'm going in July. I don't know how to email you though.

Be careful of pickpockets in Barcelona, especially on busses and trains

Stay small (dining places) in Paris and rome

That's all I got

Funny, we have friends on the same trip schedule.

Bob?

Sorry - I didn't think so - they have the whole trip already planned. Wouldn't be like him to ask questions either.

I'll second cinq sentits in barcelona, had one of the best foie gras dishes ever there. Also, la vinateria del call in the gothic quarter is a great place for old school tapas. For a great affordable lunch try el casal, for 11 euros you can get a 3 course meal with a glass of wine.

Egg,
My wife and I will be traveling to Paris as well in mid to late May. We have traveled there the last several years and have found that it's a hard place to find a bad meal.

The best meal that I have ever had, including from a price/value perspective was lunch at Guy Savoy. They have been running a 110 euro per person 3 course lunch that was really like about 8 courses. I booked it again this year until I decided to go to Le Cinq instead. I just checked the Guy Savoy website, and it looks like they are relocating, but if you are interested, I would recommend contacting them and asking if the 110 euro lunch menu is still available, as they booked me for 5/22 without a problem.

A few other places that I am sure to hit are L'As du Fallafel for their falafel (seriously good) and Maison Georges Larnicol for their kouignettes.

A few other pastries that I would recommend are the Mont Blanc at Angelina (try their hot chocolate, too) and my wife really likes the Paris Brest. We got one at Gosselin.

Also, if you like the taste of truffle, check out Maison de la Truffe. We found it on our last day there last year and had lunch just before heading to the airport. It was fantastic, and I am not a huge fan of truffle.

Way better than L'As is Maoz, one in the 6th and another in the 5th. Here's what David Lebovitz says about Maoz, and I concur (after sampling both): LINK /

Rome recs: Roscioli (the bakery and the wine/foodshop/cafe), Antico Forno in the corner of the Campo di Fiori for pizza bianca, Fatamorgana for gelato (via Laurino near piazza Polopo), the new Testaccio market....
