Now you're just being silly. Predator was great, but not the equal of T2.

True Lies is Arnolds most fun action movie

True Lies is fun. Fun does not equal "Greatest".

I agree the discussion might expand to Die Hard, First Blood, maybe Aliens (not to get too crazy with the Cameron love, since he's practically dead to me now ) - but that's about it.

And that's not counting Star Wars (particularly Empire), Star Trek (particularly TWOK) or LOTR as "action" movies.

Toss up:

Die Hard, Commando, Predator, terminator 2

Then come other Arnold greats like Running Man, Total Recall, True Lies

It's my favorite type of movie. Specifically Arnold.

This calls for an action movie tournament on this board. Somebody make the bracket.

ETA: Honorable mention for Bourne Identity.

I guess the obvious answer is Die Hard or T2. But I will go a different direction since it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Starship Troopers.

Fun arse movie, and there is an abundance of action throughout the whole thing.

Sincerely,
TD-M/TV's resident Starship Troopers fanboy

As a pure action movie, Predator is better.

You have Arnold in his prime. There was no more physically imposing presence on screen than Mid 80's Schwarzenegger. But here we have Arnold face an enemy that he cant physically overpower. You get the sense that Arnold is fighting an unstoppable enemy. Its not Commando with Arnold just gunning down droves of bad guys. The Predator picks them off one at a time, and Arnold has to beat him by being smart and crafty.

T2 is still one of my favorites, but Arnold plays a robot fighting another robot. The effects were great, the plot is great, but the pure raw action is still not as good as Predator.

Keep in mind, were debating two of the best action movies to come out in the last 30 years.

Thats why I said Fun. Its such a good movie, has a little bit for everyone.

See, First Blood I never put in my pantheon. First Blood is a serious film. First Blood Part II is an action movie.

Now we can debate that some serious films are also action movies, but I tend to separate the two. Saving Private Ryan has great battle scenes, but the action is not what drives the movie.

Die Hard and it's not even close.

Predator and T2 are close seconds.

This. Raid 2 was a little bit slower but damn those action scenes were amazing. Final fight in the kitchen was flawless.

I'll nominate MacGruber

MacGruber: How's your nose, rookie?

Lt. Dixon Piper: It's fine. I just banged it into a giant vagina.

MacGruber: So, my face is a vagina, huh? Well, I bet you wish your nose was a dick... so you could frick butts.

First Blood is a serious film.

But that is why it is underrated, IMHO. It did both.

It is the genesis of the modern action film - it is plain as day. The fact it had the serious overtone of the plight of Vietnam vets and pulled off both pieces so seamlessly - not preachy like Coming Home or Born on the 4th of July or weird like The Deer Hunter (great film BTW - just weird) - First Blood gave us the template for ALL action films since - including the greats mentioned on this list, notably Die Hard.

The Die Hard, Terminator, Alien, Lethal Weapon and Predator franchises all showed that such films could be profitable, as well as the Rambo series following First Blood - of all of those, only First Blood stands out as separate from its franchise (and, the original Alien, of course, but that was more of a space horror film by Ridley than the action oriented series it became later).
