Need some advice--my son is a lefty and is beginning to learn to shoot. It's become obvious to me that shooting right handed guns will be very awkward/unsafe, and left handed youth models are few and far between. What say you re just teaching him to shoot right handed from the get go? He's 5 BTW

I wouldn't force him to shoot right-handed if he is left-handed just because of the availability of left-handed guns.

Now if he is right eye dominant that's more of a reason to shoot right-handed.

He should shoot based on his dominant eye rather than dominant hand.

Teach both.

Learning to shoot with your offhand vastly improves the other.

When my buddies celebrate a 200 yard bullseye with a high powered rifle.... I die a little inside.

I shoot left handed, but sometimes wish I had just learned right. Although there are only several guns I have found uncomfortable in my life.

This is not the case, teach him left handed. Don't be a lefty hater...

I shoot left handed as well and the only gun I found uncomfortable is an AR15.
As another post stated let him shoot how he is comfortable.

On many guns the safety can be reversed.

Anything else like baseball or jacking off I'd say no way. Let him do it how it feels best to him.

But with the limited availability of left handed guns, and an even more limited secondary/used market I don't think this is the worst idea in the world.

I'm a lefty, shooting left handed, left eye dominant. Been using right handed firearms all my life and never had an issue with the shotgun. Technically the shotgunner isn't supposed to close an eye, so dominance shouldn't be an issue.

Rifles and handguns can be a little different based on safety and mag release.

There are plenty of lefty shotguns available, teach him to shoot and enjoy shooting, worry about the rest later.

So it is better to shoot a gun less accurately and less naturally than he could? That is safer?

I don't think it's unsafe for him to shoot against his natural eye. Millions of people do it. But if he's left eye dominant, I would let him shoot that way.

My dad made my bro (lefty)shoot right handed at a young age and now he's probably a better shot than all of us. Will be like riding a bike once he gets used to it and will thank you later.

This. When my twin brother and I were 10, we were shooting skeet with a single shot 12 gauge. My brother shot it one time, turned to hand it to me, and a large gash had opened on the top of his right cheek.

Come to find out, though we are both right handed, he is left eye dominant. He leaned his head over the cocked hammer on the gun so he could see better down the barrel with his left eye, and when the hammer came forward upon pulling the trigger it sliced his cheek open. He didn't even feel it until I said something. That was nearly 3 decades ago and he still has a slight scar.

He doesn't shoot much, but when he does he shoots left-handed and uses a right handed rifle, and a left handed 870 Wingmaster.

OP, take a piece of paper and roll it into a tube or give him an empty paper towel roll. Tell him to put it up to his eye and look through it.

Whichever eye he put it to is his dominant eye.

I can shoot a shotgun pretty much equally well off of either shoulder. Not so with a rifle or pistol.

Occasionally hunt with a guy that is comfortable shooting with either hand. Pretty impressive range on the ducks. For the second shot, he can swap hands instead of spinning around, losing balance and looking foolish

Well if you want him to be able to walk into any buddy's hunting camp, pick up a gun, and be able to shoot it, then teach him right handed.

BUT. Like said it's really what his dominate eye is. But make him learn both ways.

Fwiw. I'm right handed, left eye dominate. I shoot right handed. My dad is a lefty and shoots over/unders and shoots lefty. But I can change up and shoot skeet lefty. It freaks some of my buddies out.

I think it's more about his dominant eye than being left handed.

I am left handed, but right eye dominant, and shoot right handed.
