re: Check out this blog post from 2005 about Miles regarding the offense

I remember that Tennessee game vividly. When Miles came out trying to run out the clock with the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, he lost me forever as a fan. I cannot stand conservative coaching. It is the dumbest thing ever. How many great generals are known for being conservative? Not one. In the words of Frederick the Great, incorrectly quoted by Patton in the movie Patton, "de l'audace, encore de l'audace et toujours de l'audace." Audacity, more audacity, and ever more audacity. That is how you win consistently.

I would suggest he get more horses then....and stop making excuses for our anemic passing game.

Go ahead and hang my hat on three of the best QBs in LSU history that played their best ball in Miles' 10 year tenure???? Ok, I guess I'll do that

And there it is folks. At least he's honest.
What's 3 West titles, 2 SEC titles, a National Championship, and another appearance in the title game after our first undefeated SEC title since 1958 compared to the first drive of the second half of the second game Miles' tenure???
Thank you Leon, for your post

This is a thing of beauty.

Only 28 throws? Sounds like the air raid offense compared to last year

Some of this stuff is almost identical to what people are saying now.
Not to pile on, but it's nowhere close to what people are saying now

JaMarcus Russell is a passing quarterback
Nobody is saying Jennings is actually a QB.

we attempted only 28 throws and gained only 158 yards in the air
1) We are attempting like 21 these days; so in 2005 we were actually throwing the ball 33% more.
2) The completion %age against top teams in 2005 is around 55%. The completion %age against top teams last season was 46%.
3) As a % of playcalling, we passed the ball ~40% of the time in 2005 compared to 30% of the time in 2014.
quote:
The capper, though, was Miles” decision to sit on the ball in a tie game with two minutes to go. Hey coach, they call it a “two minute drill” for a reason. If you have an offense that you don”t think can move the ball, then you need a new offense
How many clock management issues did we have this year where you could say "man I'm confident enough in our offense to be a lot more aggressive here".
The context is NOTHING like what was being said in 2005.

Jamarcus was a better QB in 2006 than he was in 2004. Flynn was a better QB as a starter in 2007 than as a reserve in 2004. Mettenberger was a better QB in 2013 than he was in 2012. I don't see how any of this is arguable.
If that is going to be the base of your argument, then explain the woefully under development of the following players that Miles recruited.
Jarrett Lee
T.C. McCartney
Jimmy Welker
Jordan Jefferson
Kyle Ridley
Paul Scioneaux
Russell Shepard
Barrett Bailey
Alex Walton
Jared Foster
Stephen Rivers
Jordan Jefferson
Jerrard Randall
Ronnie Arant
Anthony Jennings
Brandon Harris
Brad Kragthorpe

Do you realize that there are players at EVERY position that are brought in for depth purposes or as walk-ons with no real expectation of seeing the field? And that QB is the only position aside from special teams where one player takes 100% of the snaps?
But please, go ahead and use T.C. McCartney and Brad Kragthorpe as examples of Miles not developing QBs.
Posted on 1/20/15 at 12:34 pm to YouAre8Up
Man that list is fricking terrible and you know it. A bunch of walk-ons, including a couple from when we actually had decent QB play.
A couple of personal favors (McCartney and Kragthorpe) that never had much chance of seeing the field.
A guy that just finished his TRUE FRESHMAN season with significant playing time. I'm sure his development is over though.
A couple of transfers that have gone on to do nothing. I mean, you might have a point if any of them had done anything post-LSU career to make you say "hmm, maybe we could have gotten more out of that guy."

First...as has been said, thanks for the honesty. I've said it more times than I can count, but it's always nice to have someone come out and own this absurd position...so kudos for that at least.
That being said...I get people being upset that night. I really do. Although it would not have changed ANYTHING about our personal situations at that point in this region, it really did feel like we NEEDED to win that game. It's why going up 21-0 felt so god damned good. But in retrospect, and knowing what we knew shortly after that game...the situations the guys were going through...the fact that many had been working in relief roles and had LITERALLY lost weight leading up to that game...how can anyone question trying to run out the clock knowing his guys were soon going to be gassed?
Instead, we got a fan base who was hurting for reasons which had NOTHING to do with LSU football hang that fricking loss around Les Miles' neck as if he personally had come through the area and blew down houses and ruined businesses. It's why you STILL see fricking imbiciles butthurt over this VERY meaningless loss 10+ years later! frick...LSU still made it to the SECCG that season with no off weeks! The loss meant nothing...and yet we have guys saying they never forgave him?
It's honestly VERY hard not to hate LSU fans.

All of this right here.
What some people use as a lame arse excuse to hate Miles is one of the reasons I love him. In his first year here, following a 9-3 season which included a loss to Iowa, he goes through one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit the state. Many players on that team were personally affected and all of them felt the effects to some extent. To deal with all of that and still win 11 games and be ranked in the top 5 is nothing short of spectacular.

That's an adult, reasonable take on that season.
The flip side, and more common it seems, is that it PROVES how shitty Miles is as a coach because that team of Saban's players were able to win 11 games EVEN DURING that year of turmoil.
Like I said...I get being upset at the time. Hell...even "angry" if you needed to be. But to not see what strain the guys and program were under a week after and get over it was bad enough. Guys that do that even today with losses drive me crazy. But to STILL be holding on to that loss a decade after it happened is absolutely insane.

The two hardest schedules LSU has played in the history of the program were 11 and 07, if you go by strength of schedule. I would throw 05 up there just because of the circumstances around the state. Add to the fact it took several years before you saw Nola become the hot bed in recruiting it was before Katrina.
To sit here and say Les hasn't done a spectacular job is idiotic. And it shows most the haters never gave him a chance because of the loss to Tennessee. Les has been the best coach since Dietzel and will finish as the best coach in the history of the program. Some of us my not even live to see another coach accomplish what Miles has.

Made me think of how Mike McCarthy coached his Packers' offense when ahead by less than two TD's with just over 5 minutes remaining. I would have fired him afterward!

You guys are idiots.....any problem with the program period is Miles's fault. PERIOD
He's also responsible for 2 sec titles, 3 sec west titles, 1 bcs championship. 4 of the best offenses in the history of the program. Period.

After ten seasons, does anyone really think Les would have taken a different approach had the external circumstances been 'normal'? I don't. He would have still slowed the game down (which is by no means all bad).
And it ought to be mentioned that the UTenn team finished 5-6 (I think), had to fly to Red Stick on game day and play in an environment that many will rank as sauna-like. It wasn't just us who had unusual circumstances to deal with.

McCarthy squandered that lead with the NFLs premier QB in the prime of his career.
The two situations aren't remotely comparable

The only thing that even remotely stings from the Tenn. loss in 05 is the sad fact that Rick Friggin' Clausen was able to come into Death Valley and beat a team he was nowhere good enough to even crack the 2-deep for. That is one of the biggest "Scratch my head in confusion" games I've ever witnessed on any level of sports. That dude was by far the worst Clausen.
