I am a PT. I have my doctorate. I don't address myself as Dr. to patients but I'm "technically" a Dr. The education PT's get is comparable to those in med school. It is soley based on the musculoskeletal and neuro systems. However, it is not required to go through residencies... Yet.

Yea, Scruffy knows. He has plenty of friends who are PTs.
It's fun to poke fun at people though.
So much animosity.

First you have to define what a "real doctor" is

So they also have to go to med school? That doesn't make sense
dentsists go to dental school. they know about one percent of someone that goes to med school

Don't believe that is true.
I don't think it is either. That would mean a dentist would have to go to medical school, then dental school. That doesn't sound right.

I saw a classified the other day for a janitor at a hospital labeled "environmental technician"

Oral surgeons go to both dental school and medical school.
That makes sense. He was probably talking only about oral surgeons.

A simple and imprecise rule if thumb is that if you can write prescriptions, you're a doctor.

can't PA's and NP's write them?

He is a doctor but did not got to medical school. Orthodontists go to medical school.
Posted on 1/14/15 at 12:36 pm to Berry McCaulkiner
Doctor is an academic title so yes they are real doctors.
Posted on 1/14/15 at 12:36 pm to TheDeathValley
Orthodontists do a residency at the dental school. Not medical school
Posted on 1/14/15 at 12:36 pm to Berry McCaulkiner
Aren't we just "tooth carpenters". At least that's what that old instructor dude in dental school told us.
Or did he say we were doctors and not "tooth carpenters"?
shite, fwiw, I don't like to be called doctor anyway. Just call me Maestro.

I know NPs can and for most practical purposes NPs can be considered doctors.

Used to be co signed, but maybe they changed that in some states.

Having a debate with a friend and he says no. I say yes. What says the OT? If not, why not?
Of course they are. They have a doctorate. They spend 4 years at Dental School, just like MD's. DDS stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery so they technically are surgeons. Your friend is an idiot.

Not by real doctors.

They have a doctoral degree so yes they are. They are also in a medical field. However, they are not medical doctors.
