Are dentists real doctors?

Having a debate with a friend and he says no. I say yes. What says the OT? If not, why not?

They have a doctorate. So yes, they are a "real doctor". No reason to debate.

Physical therapists get doctorate's now (DPT), but they are not doctors once they obtain it

Yes they are. They may not be medical doctors or a physician, but they most certainly hold a doctorate in their field.

They aren't medical doctors and can't present themselves as such, but that they do have a doctorate.

I am a doctor. Most people don't think of attorneys as doctors though

They are doctors. Just not medical doctors. There are all kinds of doctors.

FWIW, you can get a doctorate in theology at an online university and technically be a doctor. I think people confuse doctor as being only applicable to medical doctors.
