The truth about LSU's budget--

Everytime I turn around I read people whining about Jindal's cuts to higher education and his refusal to raise taxes to stop it.
Well that just isn't true.
LSU had $10.9 million more in revenue in 2013/14 than in 2012/13.
Oh the direct state subsidy was less but self generated funds, namely tuition was more.

Furthermore in 2008 LSU had $438 million in revenue and had $453 million in 2013/14.
Tired of the whining.
Tired of the whining.

but "because jindal cut spending"......

Apparently, you aren't familiar with the liberal definition of "cut".
In Libtard land, a "cut" is whenever a governmental budget doesn't go up more than 3X's the rate of inflation.

I don't particularly like Jindal and this is one reason. He comes up with these ideas and never follows through. He has lost all creditability in the state and one reason is he is not here enough to fight for his plans and defend things he does do.
He is committed to Bobby and that is it.

LSU has become - like every other State-run, -funded, or controlled entity - primarily an employment and retirement vehicle for people unwilling or unable to compete in the free market.
The supposed function of the entity is merely a pawn to use to gain benefits for those who leach from it.
Those of us who get up every day and go fight the battle and fend for ourselves in the free market are superior to these leaches.

That is exactly right. Same statewide in all the schools.

Like floating out the idea of no state income tax at like the last minute.

Exactly. Had he a real plan and campaigned across the state telling people about it we might have gotten rid of it.

What McGrath would you have done? Would you have maintained the subsidy and if so how? Would you have raised taxes? Why not offset the subsidy with user fees--ie tuition increases? Sounds logical to me.
Tuition is still very cheap at a Louisiana school.

I remember hearing about that and everyone started scrambling around to figure out how to make it work, and realized we probably didn't have the infrastructure to make it work.

Well, when people talk about cuts to higher ed, they are generally talking about education instituting cuts to programs. What difference does it make to an English professor if his salary is paid by state tax dollars or tuition dollars. Instead you have higher edu faculty and staff running around like it's doomsday when their budget has not gone down!!!
If people have to pay more, then those families should complain.
And for families who might think about complaining about tuition:
1. TOPS covers like 75% of LSU students.
2. Tuition is still below the southern average even with the recent increases.

Here's the problem. LSU was losing the state subsidy amount and the legislature wouldn't increase tuition to allow for the susbsidy loss to be offset.
LAGRAD act is passed, allowing LSU to directly control tuition and fees, and then the legislature just cut their subsidy amount by a similar amount of the new tuition increase.

What does that revenue compare with what it was in 2007?
You probably should see what the budget was before it got slashed to hell for your comparison.
Not look at increasing revenue as it is climbing out of the valley.

quote:Those are important issues to deal with. You had a decision between raising taxes or cutting the the budget for LSU. They both sound unpopular but voters would get behind either one if you could justify it with the right reasons. Don't be a coward and say the budget wasn't cut.
