This is true. Black suits are for guidos and gold chain wearing douches too.
Go with navy and nothing too expensive b/c he will outgrow it. What kind of event is he going to? I'm also a fan of a sportcoat/tie and slacks for someone of his age depending on occasion.

Charcoal or Navy. Black shoes with charcoal, brown with navy. White or blue dress shirt with a simple pattern tie. You can pretty much go to anything with those two suits.

Just went through this with my son for debate
Went to Macy's in memorial city mall and bought:
Navy Blue Alfani 2 button slim cut suit
Grey Michael Kors Dress Slacks
Hilfiger khaki slacks
Black Kenneth cole shoes
About $325 total
Then went to Marshalls and bought:
White dress shirt
Light blue dress shirt
White with blue stripes dress shirt
Dress socks
Four ties
About $125
And I let him borrow my tie rack with all my ties
So for $450 he is set with a suit, he can wear navy jacket and grey slacks or navy jacket and pressed khakis
