For an average RV, I'd probably spend $30K+.
Is it really worth the cost?
We could go on a bunch of family vacations for $30K.

I had newish Class C for about 8 years.

In the end I could have easily rented one for the number of times I actually used it.

Storage, maintenance, tires, fuel, insurance, depreciation, etc...

I would think you would have to use it several times a month to justify the cost of buying one.

They depreciate like cars...

Before kids, we used it at least once a month. Sometimes more.

With young kids, twice a year. T-ball dominates the spring, soccer is every Saturday in the fall.

So you're talking a 5th wheel then? You can find a good used one for less than 30K.

My dad bought one for 16K 5 years ago. It had just been sitting in some guy's yard for years. Functionally it was great - just needed $300-400 in repairs and plenty of good cleaning. By the time we got done it looked fantastic.

To answer - he uses it all the time but is also retired now. If I had it I would probably use it a lot too since it's so easy to just pull up to the campsite and unhook the trailer.

I have been around a good number of folks who have them....some use them every weekend during the summer and some only use them a couple of times per year...

like any other hobby, you can't look at it as being "worth it" or not, because there are no concrete figures to compare to....basically, you just have to decide whether you and your family will enjoy it enough to spend that much money on it...

I can say that my family had a camper when I was young and some of the absolute best memories of my childhood were when we camped at local lakes...

I use mine a lot. And there's a wide range of good stuff out there for well under the price range discussed. You just have to shop and know what you're looking for. Educate yourself before you start shopping.

The real win is if you have situations where you can use it for a camp (hunting or fishing, etc).

We use it 10-12x per year.

It will never win a fiscal argument, but that's got nothing to do with it.
Revitalized tailgating for the family, plus I love anything with an engine.

We use ours about twice a month and every weekend that we don't use it my wife and I are usually itching to go somewhere (sometimes it gets the best of us and we pack up and just go somewhere at the last minute). We also have family members and friends that have property that we are able to bring our second home with us and spend the weekend (it has been great for holidays and not having to drive home after our annual Christmas party).

We have a few family members and friends that also have RV's so it makes it fun when we can plan a trip together. We have also made a lot of friends that like to camp like we do and have children the same age as ours, so we plan trips together and it's great all around.

The MSPR on RV's are worse than vehicles in my opinion, find the model you are interested in and do some research. The MSRP on my first travel trailer was 30k+ but I was able to buy it for $23,900. You can get a decent travel trailer for that price, you just have to look and keep an open mind. I would spend a couple of weeks looking before actually buying one, so you can get an idea of what you can get for your money.

You can spend a lot less than that for a mid 20' travel trailer-new or used. We have 2 kids (4 and 7) and we try to go once a month. Sometimes more during football season (tailgating, campgrounds and away games).

We don't go on 2 week excursions across the country, but we do get to go on a lot of weekend trips. You can go camping for a weekend for under $100. Henderson State Park in Destin is less than $30/night and its right next to condos that are $300/night.

If you spend $30k on a trailer, you don't use all $30k. You are going to sell it after a few years (either because you don't use it or you will upgrade). You might buy it for $25k and sell it for $18k in a few years. Figure the real cost and it's a deal.

In my small neighborhood there are perhaps up to 12 RV owners. Those are the full sized bus-type RVs. Most of those sit in the driveways and are use less than 3 times a year. The most active one is used about 8-10 times for football or lake weekends. Several really nice ones are covered and have not moved in several years.

My father had several RVs, the last being a huge diesel pusher (around 41-42 ft.) that was well over $300K. He used the frick out of it. Most places he went, he could have easily driven to in a car and stayed at a hotel. It wasn't like he took it to any remote places. He simply doesn't like staying in hotel rooms. He finally gave it up because that thing broke almost every time he took it out, including many major issues like brake lines and hydraulics. He'd have to haul it from Bay St. Louis to Tampa on a regular basis to get things fixed. Became more trouble than it was worth, and he lost his arse when he had to dump it.

Depends, My Dad has one and when he takes it on trips, fueling up is costly, He normally puts in over 100 gallons of Diesel

True, depending on where you go and how frugal you are

And to answer other question, he barely uses his and is considering selling it.. but, 30k would probably not cover down payment

FIL has a Class A RV and he barely uses it 3 times a year. It's like 1k a year in taxes.

If I were to buy one it would be a smaller trailer type. Airstreams are pretty nice.
