You are so enlightened. Please tell us more about how kids should never be spanked. Spanking has been the most standard and effective punishment for children since recorded human history. Only in the last 10 or 15 years have people begun saying it is cruel and ineffective. Visit a middle school today anywhere in the country and tell me how well this new age philosophy is working. Peterson had the right idea, but with too much force. Society has a role in breaching the parent/child relationship when severe and repetitive abuse is occurring, but a spanking that went too far is not enough to put a man in jail and take his child from him IMO.

And let's be real and honest here. If this were just some random baby living in the ghetto of Houston are the police prosecuting the father who spanked him? No. They probably would not know who did it or care why. Adrian Peterson is facing charges because he is Adrian Peterson. Prosecutors love the camera.

why do people still beat their kids?

oh yeah, because smacking the undesired behavior out of a child is much easier than educating oneself about the how to correct the behavior through communication. I always get pissed when i see lazy parents spanking their kids.

It reminds me of the lazy dog owners who never bothered to train a dog so they just hit it when it does wrong. Pretty pathetic.

Peterson reportedly called the tree branch a “switch,” and the boy suffered bruises to his back, buttocks, ankles, legs and scrotum and defensive wounds to his hands. The boy was visiting Peterson in Texas and lives with his mother in Minnesota.

According to police reports, the child told authorities that “Daddy Peterson hit me on my face.” He also said he had been hit with a belt and “there are lots of belts in Daddy’s closet.”

Spanking has been the most standard and effective punishment for children since recorded human history.

In 37 countries around the world, it is illegal for a parent, teacher, or anyone else to spank a child, and 113 countries prohibit corporal punishment in schools. Yet in all of North America, physical punishment by a parent, as long as it is not severe, is still seen by many as necessary discipline, and condoned, or sadly, even encouraged.

For the past several years, many psychiatrists, sociological researchers, and parents have recommended that we seriously consider banning the physical punishment of children.

The most important reason, according to Dr. Peter Newell, coordinator of the organization End Punishment of Children (EPOCH), is that "all people have the right to protection of their physical integrity, and children are people too.

My parents spanked me up until about 13 years old. But before every spanking it was always explained to me why I was being spanked, what I had done wrong, and how and why I should correct that behavior. I was never spanked in anger or frustration. The communication taught me the lesson. The spanking gave me the reason for changing. It was very effective.

Young kids don't change their behavior based on "communication." They don't understand the idea of long term consequences. They respond to immediate correction. If you know how to run a disciplined household by using communication then good for you. But I doubt that would work for 90% of parents or children. Not everyone has a PhD in psychology.

How does hitting kids make you feel?

Couldn't imagine it makes you feel very good about yourself.

Agreed, and he likely will learn from what he did. What happened happened and that can't be changed. What can be done is educating Peterson on how to discipline his kid, rather than taking this boys father away from him forever to go be a spoiled rich kid living off the millions of a dad he never knew.

Peterson has parenting experience. He has a kid with his wife in Minneapolis and rumor has it he has other kids besides the one he spanked too hard, the one with his wife and the one who tragically died.

The kid was 4 and he has other kids. He is not an inexperienced parent since he lives with a son with his wife.

He hit the kid bad enough that it left cuts and scabs a few days later. This was not a spanking. This was a beating. A spanking doesn't cut your skin and leave marks like this for a two days later. The emergency room doctor did the right thing in calling this abuse. And Adrian Peterson is justifiably being indicted for child abuse.

Spankings don't leave marks like this and Doctors don't call normal spankings abuse.

He did not make a mistake and go too far. He did not try to be a good parent. He beat the kid.

Tough situation...

I don't think AP should be facing felony charges. Bringing charges of child abuse is extreme. I'm not saying consequences or counseling shouldn't be part of this but to call this a felony is reaching a bit far. Part of this is media driven and prosecutors wanting the camera.

Nah, it isn't a tough situation at all. It is perfectly acceptable for felony charges and anything less would be a tragedy.

If Peterson did this to anyone other than his child, it would be a felony without question. Let that sink in for a minute.

Yeah...let me tell you the story of my eldest cousin's son. His wife doesn't believe in corporal punishment, instead believes in talking it out, and the kid is a worthless piece of shite. He's been swearing since he was in elementary school, he's been expelled from two different schools, and his grades are piss poor. One time they were visiting our house and the kid continually annoyed my little sister. Finally my cousin had enough of it and told the kid to stop it. He ran up the stairs, my cousin grabbed him, and in response his kid SPAT ON HIM. My cousin slapped him and the kid started crying.

Want to know what happened next?

Upon hearing what happened my cousin's wife didn't go after their son. No. She took my cousin out back and chewed him out for hitting their son.

To this day he is a spoiled rotten brat who whines and cries until he gets his way.

My parents started spanking me at an early age and by the time I reached my teenage years, with the exception of a few hiccups, I had a pretty uneventful adolescent stage.

Communication? You want good communication? Show your kid a paddle, a belt, or a switch. That's good enough communication for them. It was good enough for me.

So all you gotta do is hit your kids and they will listen. Nothing wrong with a world class athlete hitting a 4 year old in the nuts with a switch
