I agree.
As I said in my first post, I respect Dawkins' intellect immensely, and I've appreciated reading his works.
This seems really out of touch relative to what I'd expect out of him.

Is it more immoral to abort a child because it has Down syndrome as opposed to aborting one just for convenience sake?

I always thought morality was either yes or no. Not relative.

but that's where we are in today's secular thinking.
We have made great strides forward in the way our collective think. Perhaps one glorious day, we'll selectively breed out a human facility in a loyal citizen to feel God when he walks through the woods or see a baby fall our the coot chute.

If the child was dtermined to be born with a condition that would cause great physical pain and would likely die early in life than I would agree that abortion would be the moral choice. Only about 15% of people with D.S. need daily care with the nitty gritty stuff like diaper changing feeding etc.. Some have heart and other abnormalites but they are not in constant discomfort.
Any human has the potential to feel suffering. Most of us will likely feel intense suffering (physical or mental) at some point in our lives so I dont really understand where Dawkins is coming from on this one.

Suffer from what?? My mom was an adapted PE teacher for 30 years so I had the opportunity to meet several of her DS students. I can tell you they were some of the happiest people I have ever met. This guy basically shares the same views as Hitler.

Would you be cool with someone else deciding whether you live or die bc of your physical decision?
Posted on 8/21/14 at 12:42 pm to STEVED00
If I did not have the ability to make that choice for my self then yes. I've already made that clear to my family.

They were only happy because they couldn't realize they were deficient. We should not allow people to be born who can't comprehend how they're being oppressed.

Of course provided there was appropriate peer review conducted by a panel of leading scientists.

You do realize that DS people are not vegetables.

Did you even read my post? My point was that people with DS are not constantly suffering and most dont need constant care. Two of my relatives have/ had DS (one passed recently) and lived happy productive lives. I do think there are certain conditions where I would choose to abort. DS is not one of those conditions.

Well I believe it is but some on here seem to be outraged that Dawkins said he would abort a Down's syndrome child but on the other hand, they are fine with a woman aborting a child just because she doesn't want it! To me, you are either outraged because you are against abortion, or you shouldn't be outraged at all. There really isn't any middle ground.

What a truly ignorant piece of shite.
People with Down's Syndrome lead extraordinarily gratifying and inspirational lives and have an incredible capacity for love and empathy with the right support system.

Gene Stallings would disagree.
Gene Stallings >>> Dawkins ?

Ignorant is the precise word I'd choose to describe him. One can be intelligent and ignorant simultaneously. These types of people are the most dangerous ones on Earth. If Dawkins had the capacity or presence to convince large numbers of people then he'd be up there with Mao, Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot.

I consider Dawkins a pretty smart dude but this was one of the dumbest things I've ever heard/read.

Just as a public service announcement, let me say when you hear anybody start promulgating any idea about who is worthy to live, you'd better perk your ears up and start paying attention.
Posted on 8/21/14 at 2:04 pm to TN Bhoy
I can't agree with that.
Hell, if I knew a kid was coming out like S.E.C. Crazy I would not abort him.
And he makes a Down's Syndrome child look like Richard Dawkins.
