ok...well that isn't bad then

I've had shared tables before so I wasn't sure

the only difference in a shared table and a Peche shared bench is about 6 inches. I could hear both conversations next to me, and they were speaking low. I'm ok with this type of seating if in a small group, but not on a private 2 person date. They have it all wrong there.

I've had the hushpuppies, also, and loved them, but I love hushpuppies. I had the crawfish bisque, which is probably similar to the shrimp and it was very well seasoned. Didn't have the other items that the OP had. I'm getting the whole fish next time regardless of whether the whole table wants it or not.

meh

a lot of restaurants are set up this way

I don't think anyone would really consider Peche a formal, romantic date type place, so this wouldn't bother me

Did they know you wanted a "private dinner?" There is a good amount of seating there that isn't like that.

I wish we would've known about the Tuna Collar. My neighbor had it, and it looked great. I asked what it was, and he said it was not on the menu but a special. My waiter never once told me about this. I was about to sneak a bite of his tuna, but my wife spotted me and gave me "the look."

Oh, I almost forgot about the seating. We were put in a booth and forced to share with others. WTF is the deal with this? That was a huge turnoff for us. We wanted a private dinner and wound up chatting away with our neighbors to the left and right of us. Half the place is setup like this. That's really poor design in my opinion.

Agree with this 100%. I hate it when I can hold hands with my neighbors. Noodle & Pie and LPG have the same issue.

If I'm dropping 150 on dinner I'm not sitting next to 2 couples who can hear my every whisper. LPG I requested to move to a more private table which they obliged. Some of their tables are so close I would just prefer to sit at the bar.

They have the exact same set up at Cochon.

Good to know. We plan on this as our next spot.

I think reservation for 2 should automatically be private. Not many couples want to go to dinner and share seating with others. If I would've known that this could happen, I would've specified. But again, it should be standard to put 2 top reservations in a private spot.

Yeah it really is that bad when you want and expect a private dinner.

Meh, you're not really sharing if you don't want to. I did dinner at Ruth's on Fulton a few weeks ago, and our table was pretty close to our neighbor's as well. We seemed to have a private conversation when we wanted to just fine.

Same thing this past weekend at Napoleon House. Not really much private about that place as far as space is concerned, didn't seem to phase us.

Did you think you should get your own room? There is nothing wrong with that spacing unless you and the guy next to you were both 250+

Then don't go to Peche. Tables are close and it's loud. It's just a fact. I don't think it's a bad thing, it's never bothered me, but I know what I'm getting experience wise when I walk in the place.

This is not complicated. Do your research before you dine. Almost every thread on here about Peche mentions the noise level.

Next time I'm flying solo for lunch and will enjoy this famed whole fish to myself... Along with some hush pups...and shrimp toast.

Yup. Cochon actually got my goat because it was a beautiful crisp spring day screaming patio dining which is one reason I chose Cochon on that occasion. The hostess told me she COULD NOT sit me outside because most of the waitstaff had been cut for the afternoon. I ended up being seated just inches away from another couple. Turns out we had some great conversation, but I certainly would have liked to have sat outside.

I've been to Peche a number of times, but only mid afternoon so I've never ran into any seating issues. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it...if you can, hit up Peche mid afternoon to avoid the horror stories.

Whole fish, tuna crudo, Island Creek oysters, fried Brussels sprouts...how can you go wrong ordering these? Fish sticks?...not so much. What part of a fish is the stick anyway???

The tuna dip was the most disappointing, since this is what I was most looking forward to. We both agreed that the only thing we could taste was the smoke taste and the spice (which isn't a "taste")

Yea, the smoke flavor is pretty intense on that one. It could be toned down a bit to let the tuna flavors come through a bit.

I was more disappointed that they give you saltine crackers with it. I would like it much better with some thin, toasted slices of french bread. Some bread/starch is definitely need to offset to intense smoke flavor.

I didn't try the other dishes you ordered. It was a really nice meal, but I wasn't quite blown like I was expecting based on the rave reviews (and eventual James Beard award).

I'm not sure you ordered their best dishes, but I've only been once. Most of what we had was very good to extremely good.
