Correct, that and we had key injuries to our more athletic guys and were simply more wore down due to our grueling group stage

Lukaku also came on in the 91st minute. Kind of important to keep in mind in this discussion.

Our issue isn't athleticism. The US team is every bit as athletic as the teams we lost to. Where we really fall behind is in player development.

I'm not talking about children, although more children playing would help too. What I mean is after high school the best soccer players in other countries go to soccer academies where they train 5-7 days a week, 12 months a year. Where our players go to college where the NCAA says they can train with a coach for 2 months a year. So during a time when they should be developing and building their on-field moves and talents, they just aren't.

As long as the NCAA is holding back our best players we won't catch up. It just won't happen.

Belgium wasn't faster. They pass the ball better. Don't confuse the two. The ball can travel faster than any player.

I think Lukaku is exactly what US fans thought Jozy would be.

For the US, Fabian Johnson and Yedlin (I realize they weren't on at the same time) are as fast as anyone in the game. Bedoya, too. Beasley was like that once, although I'd still rate him fast. Bradley is also above average.

However, we have lots of guys who aren't as fast as the Belgians (granted the Belgians are very athletic and one of the most promising sides in the world). I imagine that's why Beckerman didn't play, and our central defenders really struggled with their midfielders.

Prince Harry is pretty damn fast, as is Mertens. And of course Lukaku and Origi

You guys keep going on and on about how our athletes aren't the best we have to offer. The USMNT problems have almost nothing to do with athletic ability. Its all in our technical skills our team really struggles with passing and trapping two of the most basic skills of soccer.

Yeldin is fast as frick.

I absolutely agree that our problem was technical skill. It will be nice when soccer gets out of the middle class and into the projects though. We missed Jozy's strength.

Great atheletes no doubt, but I feel like players in the mold of Reggie Bush, Adrian Peterson, Odell Beckham, Chris Johnson, Desean Jackson would wreck some shite on the wolrd stage if growing up playing soccer.

The best athletes in our country don't play soccer

The best potential white athletes don't play sports either. The importance of sport is lost as a group attains a higher stature and income for the most part. As a poor kid sports were everything to me, my kids pffft whatever. Think on a whole higher plane than I did.

the best soccer players from the world's top teams aren't their best athletes, what makes you think that the best athletes in the US would be the top soccer players? Let's look at the top goal scorers in the world cup:

James 5'11" 170lbs
Mueller 6'0" 160lbs
Messi 5'7" 150lbs
Neymar 6'1" 180lbs
Robben 5'10" 160lbs

Do you think these guys are the best athletes in their country?

I think I agree with most of what you're saying. However, the best athlete in the world is basically 6'1", 185 pounds, and if you saw him in the street in normal clothing, you'd think he was a college student or a kid who just recently graduated.
