Yeah that black guy for Belguim towards the end looked like the best athlete on the field and Mirrales was the fastest by a mile.

They also looked like the stronger team. They were tossing the USA players around and pushing them out of the way like it was nothing.

I don't follow soccer and I don't have a clue about strategy but from an athleticism standpoint, USA looked like the inferior team.

We really missed the muscle of Jozy Altidore in this game. Fabian's hammy injury was unfortunate too.

Your eyes do.

For the umpteenth time, speed is not the reason we got eliminated or even struggled. You seriously don't even have to be a huge soccer fan to see that tbh.

Belgium is faster, and with Jozy injured, the Belgians had stronger players than us.

However, I fully agree that the reason why we lost is not because of speed but the lack of on-ball skill of our team. There are very few finesse guys on the team, and when Fabian went down early in the game, we lost another good one.

In a month of 0-0 matches you are trying to make me believe breakaways were being put on goal, repeatedly. Seriously, give it up.

Again, I feel like the typical chick watching a football game because I have no clue what's going on half the time watching soccer, but I can say with complete confidence that our goalie is a fricking BEAST.

Where does Howard rank as far as goalie's are concerned in the game today? The best? Top 5? Top 10?

He's up there

Fantastic performance by Mr. Howard.

He is top 10. Today was outstanding. The German goalie yesterday had an incredible game too, as did the Mexican keeper against Brazil in the first round.

I'd say Manuel Neuer (the German) is the gold standard right now.

No, I'm telling you that a speed discrepancy was not our primary problem in this tournament. If you disagree then we are at an impasse.

Think what you wish

we had the 2, possibly 3 fastest guys in this game

and our super athletic striker got hurt in game 1

Neuer has been annoyingly (and so very german) efficient as GK

I've thought about this. Imagine if all of those college football athletes grew up playing soccer instead of football. I feel like they would have a huge athletic advantage on every team...

Forrealdoe

The fact that our national team is competitive NOW is scary since soccer is a niche sport for most Americans.

Only going to keep getting better IMO.

Imagine guys like AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, Chris Paul and LeBron on a soccer team, having played the game since childhood

It should be worth nothing that the Belgian team rest 9 of their players their last game in the group, so they were fresher and had plenty of energy to compete with the things we are usually good at, which is stamina and strength. We also had some key injuries we affected our team pretty severely.
