Started w/ base salary of $56,400 four years ago this past weekend. Mechanical engineer working in the petroleum engineering field. I've moved into the project management side of the business and doubled that last year if you include bonuses. Get your engineering degree even if you hate the idea of being an engineer. You will get the high paying management jobs before a business major..... at least on the oilfield.

Top IB analysts at a good shop can clear $160k in ther first year out of undergrad. Majority make less, but still > $100k.
Maybe, but "top IB analysts at a good shop" don't come from LSU. As far as the SEC is concerned there are probably only a few from Vandy.

I have a friend who recently finished their 2 yr analyst contract working for Goldman and stayed on board. Is an LSU alum.

I have a high paying management job in the oilfield and I dropped out of college. I was actually chosen over a guy with a petroleum engineering degree because I had more experience.
Fwiw, I wish I had an engineering degree.

but frick engineering. Not a fan at all.
Agreed. I know ChemE jobs and they suck. Not worth the extra pay early, IMO. But to each his own.

Unless times have changed, prepare your anus for a starting sub 45k salary.

Your friend would do well to ensure they have experience and as high a gpa as possible. I know people with 3.8s and 3.9s that were not admitted b/c they had no experience.
Experience?
Posted on 6/18/14 at 8:37 pm to malvin
How many years experience? I'll be the first to admit I have to get help from other guys who have 15+ years experience everyday. I'm still learning for sure. But the guys who had my position before me had years of experience, when I only had 2.

Doesn't a female posters sister work there?

Well, I should preface that by saying I started my career in 2002 in Lafayette before the current tech boom. Jobs were few and far between. Things may have changed by now.

that's awesome that he was able to get in, but that's definitely not the norm. Wall St firms recruit heavily from the Ivy league schools. From the south I would say that Duke does the best.
I went straight into sales my first year out of college, made somewhere between 65-70 my first year. I've since moved up to a sales manager and the pay is great.

Not quite. Do lots of derm and was doing endoscopy. Do a little better than that now. Pain management is less than 10% of my practice. Maybe less than 5%. Have to do some since we don't have pain management within 2 hours of us.
