You would just have to work offshore for uncertain amounts of time. We work until the job's done. You would not be an engineer, and you would be working under guys with no degrees, but the money is there. Lately they will hire engineer majors for these positions. It's just the worst lifestyle I can think of. You may be out for a week, you may be out for 40+ days.

My friend, while not offshore, is in the same boat. From what he tells me he basically can't leave the rig until his job is done. And when he does leave, it's to head straight to different rig to start it all over. His work day doesn't start and stop in the traditional sense, it's just non-stop. While he likes the money, he is not a fan of the lifestyle (and that's putting it mildly).

I graduated from petroleum engineering back in '05 from LSU and started at 80k base + benefits. I think now coming out of school guys are making right at 6 figures. Not a bad way to start, only goes up from there. Then if you go the consulting route it just gets ridiculous, seriously...

I've got 2 friends starting out at Exxon making $101k and $99k, but I don't think they're getting bonuses. I'll be starting around $80k with bonuses and benefits.

I'm special alright! But not necessarily in a good way.

and don't go to the hospital.

I'm weird, but this is one thing I wouldn't want to give up. I like the hospital.

It's a money loser if you have a practice. You're overhead is there whether you are or not. I still go from time to time if things are going how I think they should. I still control the pt's and check on them daily on the computer. But my income went up $150k/year the first year I quit going. Made more efficient use of my clinic and employees. Reimbursement for hospital services is shitty. It doesn't account in for overhead since the hospital is supplying the facility and staff. That's why a hospitalist makes sense. I think it fragments care, but it's a financial must if you want to thrive and have a successful practice.

I know one Doc that acts as the hospitalist for his group. They pay him a premium to do it since the rest of the group doesn't want to. He gets a prorated overhead percent since he doesn't start clinic until one each day. He likes it and they like it. That's something to think about if you're in a group.

Started my frist yr as an MWD in the field and made 109K...2nd year I was up to 164K. It comes at a cost though...I was constantly gone from home, working on the rigs, and this was in North Dakota...that place frickin sucks...but being a single man I pretty much had free reign to do whatever the hell I wanted on my days off...that was pretty nice.

How do you figure? I have never heard of a big 4 giving a raise when you pass the CPA.

None of us will be in Houston. They're in Baton Rouge and I'll be living in Nederland.

Unless times have changed, prepare your anus for a starting sub 45k salary.

Correctamundo. You will not get the IT dream job right out of college. Be prepared to feel dumb, and work lots of hours.

Got my degree in Information Systems and started at 40k with an IT consulting firm. I believe the normal range for my company starting out is between 40-50. I had 0 experience so of course I came in low.

I have however close to doubled that in 3 years.
