re: What is in your camping gear?

We bought a percolator that we just put on the grate for some very good coffee. If we are by the truck, I just bring my coffee maker and plug it into the inverter.

Perked coffee on a camping trip sure seems to be better.

Not to hijack the thread, but we are going camping in Yellowstone near the end of May. Nighttime temps look to be close to freezing. Any advice for camping out in the cold?

-Check the rating on your sleeping bags.
-Get naked in the sleeping bag...don't dress up before you get in it. Socks and underwear will suffice.
-Have a pad or air mattress under your sleeping bag.
-Drink plenty of water not booze

We call "cowboy coffee" when you just dump the grounds directly into a pot of boiling water. Pull off of fire, sprinkle a little cold water on top - or eggshells if you got any - to force the grounds to drop to the bottom of the pot, and pour off the top. Some folks filter through a bandana, but that's for dudes.

It's surprisingly good, you just gotta resist talking that very last sip.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We'd be taking the baby with us, so there would be plenty of wet wipes, and a big garbage bag to put all the trash and dirty diapers in.

No way I'd take this camping.

It would be in the Jeep. We'd only be hiking around during the day, and back to campsite later on. I'd be able to cook most anything in it. We'd drive to a spot to camp, then set up, and have it as a homebase for sleeping and storing stuff we didn't want to take on a hike.

You bet it gets cold there. And you better be prepared for lots of fricking mosquitoes...makes the bayou seem like a cakewalk.

Where 'bouts you going? Lots, and I men LOTS of fricking people go there. You can spend an hour sitting in your truck in line to get into the gate, then driving around is like rush hour in Houston with a bunch of pricks from California.

I'm real familiar with the back-accesses that few people know about if you're willing to go off the beaten path (i.e. drive down dirt roads...albeit suitable for any car).

I backpack in...pay not a fricking dime of extortion to those frickers for admission, don't get the special Yellowstone fishing permit, and I use live bait to fish (fishing with worms or any kind of organic bait is against the law in Yellowstone).

...and carry a can of bear mace if you're going to be away from populated areas.

We only tent camp when it's cold in nice 8 person tent. No Mosquitos or sweating. Always pitch tent close to bath house. Sleep on really thick air mattresses. String Christmas lights in front of tent. And bring small TV that plays DVD's for kids. Chicot is favorite place to tent camp. I've gotten pretty good at Dutch oven cooking.

Picked up some Coleman sleeping bags this weekend. Tent has been delivered and is waiting on me at home. Also picked oh an led lantern and it is pretty bright. Perfect for hanging in the tent.

Which leads to my next question. The girl wants to go fishing too. She's 6. Just start her out on a cane pole or get her a bait cast rod and reel?

I agree. Not sure why and Im sure if I used the same perculator at the house that it wouldn't be as good.

Do your back a favor and get a good hammock. Better than most beds. I sleep in a hammock 90% of the time now. Back and neck feed great.

Plus they are tons cooler in the summer.

Yes close to freezing. Most likely under freezing with snow on the ground in parts.

Invest in down sleeping bags, keep them dry, and store non-compressed. I've slept at 25 in my hammock and was nice and warm.
