Just go to REI and they'll help you with all you need.

We just went camping 2 weekends ago: myself, wife, 3 year old daughter, 1 year old son.

- 20 x 9 tent with screened in front porch
- tarp for tent
- queen size blow up mattress
- 2 sleeping bags
- pack n play for son
- hello kitty tent (inside our tent), pillow blanket for daughter
- chairs
- ice chest
- food
- propane camping stove
- propane
- skillet and kitchen utensils
- potty for daughter
- clothes

Can't really think of everything else. I'd recommend easy stuff for food: leftover fried chicken to eat cold, muffeletta, yogurt and fruit for breakfast. Don't try to cook on the first trip unless you're sure you can't fail.

I'd also recommend going for at least 3 nights, no turning back. It is going to be a lot of effort and gear, especially with a 1 year old. Make it worth your while.

Snoopy pole brah

Get one of the little zebco combos

I think that's what she is wanting, but it would be Barbie or Disney. I need a new rod and reel myself so we're going to Dick's this week to pick some out. I was just thinking a pole might be better for her starting out. She did okay with one off of a pier two summers ago at 4 years old, and I'm not sure about how she would like casting and reeling. She will probably not catch a thing, and when I get one on the line I could let her reel it in.

I use Big Green Egg or Weber cubes as fire starter. Not always necessary, but nice to have and easy to pack.

I also have a bear canister for car camping, but I hang if backpacking. I'm sure out west at settled camp grounds they have bins.

You may have said earlier, but where are you camping?
We live in East Alabama and have taken the family to several places, always looking for new ideas.

First time, and probably many times, will just be backyard camping. But we've been to Oak Mountain in Pelham for the day a few times, and will probably go there first. I grew up in Dothan, and we've been in Birmingham for 10 years now, so most places will be around Birmingham. Where do you go? I might make a weekend trip out of it if I can go someplace cool. Do they allow camping at DeSoto? I think my girl would like the caves. And it is probably an hour from here. I've really only looked at State Park websites. I think they do camping at Tannehill as well, but I'd have to check first.

And last night we were at a TJ Maxx after taking the kids to a city park. They had this little CuisinArt portable grill. The wife wanted to get it, but I think I can find a better price. We were also talking about other things, and she said something about the cooler, after I said we'd be taking the Jeep and not her van. She said she's going to need a lot of beer if she's sleeping in a tent.

We have camped at Desoto State Park and Bucks Pocket. Cheaha has good campgrounds, but not very good fishing. Lake Chinnabee in the National forest is really fun.

One of our favorites is FDR state park over in Pine Mountain Ga. Good campgrounds, lake and you can go to Callaway gardens for some added things to do.(Birds of prey show is great for the kids)

We don't get to go as often as we like, but it is always great memories. Your kids will tell stories about the trips the rest of their lives.

Thanks for the suggestions. I remember going to Callaway as a kid. I think it was with a youth group for the day. All the boys took our mountain bikes and biked the trails all day. That kind of energy would probably kill me today, but back then I could literally ride a bike for hours at a time.

DeSoto looks like fun too. And it is an hour or less from here.

We ended up going Sunday night to Oak Mountain. It was a good time. Fishing sucked from the shore, but next time we'll get a boat and hopefully let the girl catch something.

They have tent spots and RV spots there, and when I got there to check in they had an old RV spot that the lady said there was something wrong with the electrical, but the water worked, and they were renting it out as a tent spot, so I took that one. We just parked the van on the RV pad and set up the tent in the grass. We had taken a small blow-up pool and I filled it up from the faucet for our baby to splash around in. I had heard there were fire pits available so I just took a gallon ziploc of kingsford and we cooked some hot dogs over that. Everyone seemed to have a good time for our maiden voyage. We made a small list of things we'd like to have for next time. Mainly pack some breakfast food to cook in the cooler instead of just granola bars and snack food. Several people had a good fire going in the morning and the smells of camp breakfast was almost too much.

The things we thought about for next time would be a waterhose, if we can get a spot near a faucet again. Probably just a short one, like a connector. 10 feet would be plenty. And a portable grill since that would be better to cook on than a fire pit. A small hatchet for gathering stuff for a campfire. And our beach umbrella to set up over the chairs. Just to give the kids some shade if they need it. Weather was perfect this weekend but I'd imagine it could get pretty hot in June/July when you have no A/C for the kids for a day or two.
