Uh oh, some people in Georgia are offended over a license plate

Anyone old enough to be the son of a Civil War veteran probably shouldn't be driving.

Hey... I don't agree with the whole Homosexuality is Right think being forced down my throat, so to speak... But I don't have it on a license plate so there's no way to know how backwards I am, right??? You're really a moron... Controlled by popular media viewpoints, flouridated water, Super Bowl, ESPN and a mediated reality. Wake Up. A confederate flag doesn't mean a thing but what it means to the person displaying it. And the opposition viewpoint should be encouraged at all times unless you're a GD Communist... Which is what you are... The difference between today's communist and Marxist-Leninist Communists is that ML Communists did so by choice. Today's Communists are brainwashed from Disney TV to ESPN... and don't even know it. They fall into the Republican and Democratic parties... Only the ones on the Right side of the aisle are more Facist than Communist.

one of the three most offensive things to US blacks is not the Confederate Battle Flag.
With all due respect - screw 'em.
I have five direct ancestors who fought in for the Confederacy. Not one of them owned a slave. None of their descendents that I know are racists.
I am proud of their honor and dedication to their states. Two of them left body parts on the battlefield. One survived living hell in Camp Douglas for two years. They were all honorable people and are due all the reverence that would be due to a Union soldier.
All these 21st century bad-arse goody two-shoes who cast dishonor on these men piss me off. If any one of them had been alive in that time they would have acted in the same manner - or worse.
I have not identified a single individual on this board who I can imagine in a town square in 1859 South Carolina who would lend their voice to the high and mighty principles they like to spew forth on this 2014 message board.
The only reason they would not have joined the Confederacy would be that they were scared shitless and were too much of a coward.
Oh - I had one direct ancestor who took that route. He refused to fight and hid in the woods. I have no respect for him. He didn't refuse to fight out of principle - it was out of cowardice. Screw him.

I love how, while listing the entire history of your toothless, backwoods genealogy; you impugn the one person in your family who didn't take up arms fighting for the right to continue enslaving an entire race of people.
Oh, The South, how I love your misplaced pride in your shameful past and your unwavering worship of a vagabond Jewish hippie whom you'd have hated had you actually known .

Thank you for being an exemplar of the kind of people who disgust me.
Your thinking you would have been a civil rights activist (in the 21st century definition of the term) back in 1859 is beyond stupid. You may have been a coward, but if not you would have suited up with the boys in gray - right along with the rest of the honorable men of the south.
Thanks for making my point so clear.

John Adams and Benjamin Franklin were civil rights activists and spoke out eloquently against the institution of human slavery as long ago as the 1770s.
Those are the types of Americans we should be proud of IMO.

LOL Benjamin Franklin was probably the greatest American who ever lived

Residents of GA can do what they like, but personally I would like people to have the option to indicate how exactly fricking stupid, backwards and racist they are.
That way I can avoid them.
And you get that from a plate meant to commemorate the sons of Confederate Veterans? Does a plate commemorating the Daughters of the American Revolution also offend you?
Huh? If there is one role for that flag, given it was the Battle Flag, it would seem pretty logical that it would be in association with those who fought behind it on the field of battle, that's it. Whether that's the Sons of Confederate Veterans, at a museum, a Confederate graveyard, or battlefield, those are the places it belongs. Neither it nor the American flag belong at a Klan rally or Nazi event, inappropriately used in association with a bumper sticker on someone's vehicle, or colored in school colors and displayed at a sporting event, yet we can't stop any of them from using it or misusing it. The only true role that flag DOES have is as a matter of history in association with men who died under it, because of course..... It's a flag purely designed for the sole purpose of helping soldiers to differentiate one side from the other on a smoke filled battlefield instead of confusing the old CSA National Flag with the Union Flag, which were quite similar and often mistaken for one another by both sides rallying to their respective flags. If anything, perhaps thanks are in order that it replaced the old National Flag on the battlefield from the Confederate side and the Union side as well.

Mine didn't either. He was a farmer and didn't own slaves. His motivation was simply protecting his homeland from invasion.
I think most of us would do that.

Because the men who rallied around that flag were willing to (and did) give their lives fighting to prolong the institution of slavery in America. They also gave their lives to dissolve one of the greatest concepts of a nation in the history of civilization. The fact that so many of you want to honor that heritage is beyond me.

Nobody was "invading" their land (at least not until the very very end when the die was well cast). That's such bullshite revisionist history.

And so did EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY US FLAG up until the 13th amendment was ratified in the year 1865, something you fairy tale revisionists of history who constantly rework it yourself choose to ignore and honor. It's just as of late really that it's been seen as offensive, because it was misused by hate groups, and understandable when it's misused, just like when the US Flag is misused at those same events, yet you make no mention of that in your renting of your high and mighty self righteous garments.
You hypocrites.

THAT is revisionist history. That you think the south fought "for slavery" is as moronic as thinking the north gave two shits about the plight of slaves. Stop being a dipshit.
Posted on 2/21/14 at 7:26 am to Mike da Tigah
I don't agree with that, but even if you took that point of view then you could say the current American flag was redeemed by the fact that we largely solved the question of human slavery for the entire world with the Union prevailing, forced integration upon the backwards south, etc.

The Civil War was certainly fought over slavery. Its essentially all Lincoln talked about, thought about, worried about.
